Overview and metadata sections

A textile dyer and colorist who lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Koehler wrote: Dye book comprising the receipts with an unerring and reliable instruction to weavers, manufacturers, and others ... for dying cotton, wool, and silk, published circa 1870.

A small volume with worn, leather covers comprised of formulas for dying cotton, wool, and silk. The various recipes use plant, mineral, and synthetic based dyes. The dyes are chiefly for wool in weights of ten pounds. There are a some formulas for silk, and a few for cotton. The dyes consist of colors in a variety of shades including blacks, blues, browns, grays, purples, reds, and yellows. Two Aniline dye color formulas are included in the volume. Small yarn and fabric samples are affixed with wax throughout the volume. Some samples are lacking. Two formulas--black for 10 lbs silk and chemical soap--are attributed to Andreykovicz & Dunk, importers of dye stuffs, Philadelphia, Pa. One leaf laid in the volume dated 1882 with Andreykovicz & Dunk letterhead and handwritten a formula for cardinal colored dye. On first leaf: No. 927 poplar between 9-10 street, Philadelphia, Pa. A majority of the formulas are written on the versos. Covers are torn, stained, and loose. Leaves are fragile.
