Overview and metadata sections

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania established a public school system in 1834. Before this time there were many schools already in existence in Lower Merion Township. These schools were consolidated in 1835 in response to the actions of the Commonwealth and the Lower Merion School District was established in 1836. The District still serves the needs of the students of Lower Merion Township as well as the Borough of Narberth and includes nine schools as of 2011.

This is an assembled collection of ephemera collected by the Lower Merion Historical Society relating to the Lower Merion School District. The collection is made up of various items that were produced by the schools, students, and teachers. There are a large number of school newspapers ("Merionites" and "Harriton Forum") and yearbooks, class and sport team photographs, as well as event and commencement programs. There are also a large number of newspaper clippings scrapbooks compiled by Lower Merion Junior High School principal Edward H. Snow which date from 1923 to 1941. Of special interest to local sports enthusiasts will be scrapbooks and records of the Ardmore Junior High School relays and University of Pennsylvania Relays (which include high school participants); these records include results of events/races and date from 1895 to 2010.

The schools represented in this collection include: Ardmore Junior High School, Bala Elementary School, Bala Cynwyd Junior High School, Belmont Hills Elementary School, Cynwyd Elementary School, Fairview Elementary, Gladwyne Elementary School, Harriton High School, Haverford College, Haverford School for Boys, Lower Merion High School, Merion Elementary School, Mount Pleasant Elementary School, Narberth Elementary School, Pencoyd Elementary School, Penn Wynne Elementary School, and Welsh Valley Middle School.
