Overview and metadata sections
Esther Strum Frankel was a New Jersey attorney in the firm of Frankel and Frankel (along with her husband, Leopold), a pacifist, and civil rights activist; member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, served as head its Human Rights Committee, especially active in its New Jersey branch; also involved with Women Strike for Peace and other reform movements relating to feminism and disarmament; specialized in civil rights litigation in the 1950s and Selective Service litigation in the 1960s.
The collection contains case files and occasional correspondence of Frankel relating to her work handling civil liberties and selective service litigation. It includes subject file material mostly relating to conscientious objection, and the men who resisted the draft either before being drafted or after.
Case files are organized alphabetically by the last name of the subject. Frankel's correspondence and case notes are organized chronologically. Box 7-12 contains general reference material on conscientious objection and other peace topics.
