Massachusetts Peace Society Records, 1816-1917 (inclusive) 1911-1917 (bulk)

Abstract:: The Massachusetts Peace Society was first formed in 1815, and a new organization reformed in 1911. The records of both groups have been combined here to form one archival collection. The Massachusetts Peace Society (MPS)was the second [third?] such society to form in America on December 28, 1815, organized primarily by Noah Worcester (1758-1837), a Unitarian minister. By 1819 the MPS had over 850 members, with branches established throughout the state and beyond. The MPS merged, into the newly formed American Peace Society in May 1828. A new Massachusetts Peace Society was reorganized on April 27, 1911, with Samuel B. Capen as President and James Tryon as Secretary. It was possibly a branch of the American Peace Society. World War I put an end to the activities of the MPS.

Central Organisation for a Durable Peace Collected Records, 1914-1919 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Central Organisation for a Durable Peace was formed at The Hague (the Netherlands) in April 1915 by representatives from nine European nations and the United States. The deliberations of this meeting were summarized in a manifesto, and a nine point minimum-program calling for coercive sanctions, which were studied by nine international research committees and several national committees. Departing from strict pacifism, the organization expressed a willingness to accept military sanctions against countries that started hostilities without first making a good faith effort to resolve a dispute by submitting to international arbitration or making some other appeal to the existing peace machinery.

Wisbech Local Peace Association Records, 1880-1931 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Priscilla Hannah Peckover (1833-1931) devoted much of her life toward mobilization for peace. In 1879 she formed the Wisbech Peace Association to promote the development of women in work for peace. This group of men and women became a center for peace activity in Great Britain. They concentrated on establishing peace by means of arbitration and disarmament, based on Christian theology.

World Peace Foundation Records, 1910-1960 (inclusive)

Abstract:: In 1902, Edwin Ginn began publication of an International Library to promote knowledge about peace. In July 1910, he established the International School of Peace which, in December, became the World Peace Foundation. Its purpose was to promote better international relations and world order by preparing and distributing specialized literature, mostly to college and university libraries, and by holding conferences. It was closely allied with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and supported formation of the League of Nations and the Permanent Court of International Justice and, later, the United Nations.

Promoting Enduring Peace Records, 1949- (inclusive)

Abstract:: Promoting Enduring Peace was founded in 1952, with headquarters in Woodmont, Connecticut. Principles of the organization included: peace with freedom and justice for all, support for the United Nations, and belief in religion as the fundamental force for righteousness. Today PEP's mission is to conduct peace education promoting the advent of a harmonious planetary commonwealth through the convergence of the worldwide movements for disarmament, social justice, and environmental stewardship as the foundation of sustainable peace; through education and citizen diplomacy. The PEP established the Gandhi Peace Award.

PRO-Peace Records, 1984-1986 (inclusive)

Abstract:: PRO-Peace (People Reaching Out for Peace) was a non-profit organization begun in April 1985 by David Mixner. He served as Executive Director of PRO-Peace until its collapse in March 1986. In its statement of purpose, PRO-Peace members called themselves "abolitionists" who supported efforts toward complete global nuclear disarmament. Pro-Peace staff undertook to plan a march pf 5,000 participats who would walk across the United States. On March 14, 1986 Mixner announced that PRO-Peace no longer existed. With new leadership and greatly reduced numbers, the marchers reorganized as the Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament, a grassroots, marcher-run, volunteer organization. The transcontinental trek to Washington D.C. was completed in November 1986.

Continental Walk for Disarmament and Social Justice Records, 1975-1978 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Continental Walk for Disarmament and Social Justice was initated in 1974 to "call for disarmament, a simultaneous shift of economic priorities away from militarism and toward meeting domestic and global human needs, and removal of the causes of war." When the Walk ended on October 18, 1976 at the Pentagon in Washington D.C., walkers had covered 8,000 miles through 34 states.

Fellowship of Reconciliation (U.S.) Records, 1915- (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Fellowship of Reconciliation in the U.S. was founded in 1915 by Christian pacifists. The organization, whose members are now drawn from many religious groups, seeks to apply principles of peace and social justice and non-violent social change to issues such as disarmament, conscription, race relations, economic justice, and civil liberties.
