Abstract:: The Midwest Committee for Military Counseling was founded in 1976. The MCMC provided counseling, training sessions and public education. Staff worked with counselors, attorneys, community groups and religious bodies on behalf of potential recruits to the military and people on active military duty. The MCMC ceased operation in 1995 or 1996.

New York Bureau of Legal Advice Records, 1917-1919 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Holdings in Tamiment Library: about half the records of the New York Bureau of Legal Advice consist of case histories pertaining to selective service exemption, draft evasion, conscientious objector status, military imprisonment, military discharge, desertion, amnesty, civil liberties and deportations. One third of the collection consists of office files, administrative reports and correspondence, including extensive fundraising correspondence. The remainder of the collection is made up of press releases and newspaper clippings. Correspondents include Mary Beard, Sarah N. Cleghorn, Bina Flynn, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, Agnes Smedley, Louis Untermeyer, Thorsten Veblen, H.L. Mencken, Sinclair Lewis, Judah L. Magnes, and Stephen Wise.

Edward Hasbrouck Papers, 1965-1987 (bulk)

Abstract:: Edward Hasbrouck was born in 1960 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1980, when registration for the draft was reinstituted, he refused to register. Hasbrouck worked with the National Resistance Committee and affiliated local organizations. In June 1983, he was put on probation because of his draft refusal and sentenced to 1,000 hours of community service. This sentence was revoked in November 1983 in favor of a six month prison term, which Hasbrouck served at the federal prison camp in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, from November 1983 to April 1984.

Abstract:: Albon Platt Man Jr.,was called up for the draft during World War II, but failed to register because of his conscientious objection to war, and was sentenced to three years in prison in March 1943. He was later involvemented with the Committee for Amnesty, the CCCO, the War Resisters League, and other peace groups.
