From the Women of Philadelphia U.S.A. in Answer to the Friendly Address of the Women of Exeter, England, on the Subject of Peace, 1846

Abstract:
Handwritten draft of a reply to an address from women of Exeter, England, in response to their plea urging their American sisters to help prevent war between England and the United States. This draft, of which the final version no longer exists, warns that a mother could sow the seed of blood-thirsty ambition in her son "when in his childish hours she gave him tiny weapons, and taught him how to mimic war's murderous game." Signed by Lucretia Mott. The reply, which was sent to England and is now lost, was signed by 3,525 Philadelphia women. Friendly Addresses were inspired by Joseph Crosfield, an English Quaker, and Elihu Burritt, an American, to promote friendship between the United States and Great Britain on a person-to-person level. This collection consists of documents pertaining to and the hand-signed letters of prominent American figures of the early 1920s. Many concern explorer Henry Grant Bryant and the Melville-Bryant Drift Cask Experiment. Other notable persons associated with this collection include Martin van Buren, William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, Ulysses S. Grant, and James Buchanan. Additionally, there are two autograph books within the collection.

Collection of manuscripts of the Lewis and Pratt families of Delaware County in Pennsylvania. Includes bible pages with births, marriages, and deaths, as well as Quaker documents. Of particular interest is a letter from Thomas H. Speakman to his sister, M.M. Jenkinson on an inheritance which also includes a reference to Rowland Johnson, Lucretia Mott, Clement Biddle, and James Martin at the Cherry Street meeting house.

Abstract:
This collection includes the journal of Ruth Anne Hillborn from 1864-1868. She relates events concerning the emancipation of enslaved people, the U. S. Civil War, and the Presidency of Abraham Lincoln. She also describes Lucretia Mott and her ministry. This collection also includes miscellaneous poetry, a facsimile letter to the Women's Aid Association of Philadelphia about efforts in freedman's relief, a letter from John Bailey on Quaker ministry, and extracts from an account of the death of George F. White.

Mott Manuscripts, 1831-1898 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Lucretia Mott was a prominent Philadelphia Quaker minister and a leader in reform movements, especially antislavery, education, peace, and women's rights. She was born in 1793 in Nantucket, Mass., the daughter of Thomas and Anna Coffin, and educated at Nine Partners Boarding School in Dutchess Co., N.Y. In 1811, she married James Mott and they settled in Philadelphia, Pa. The Motts were active Hicksite Quakers, and Lucretia served as clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and traveled in the ministry. James Mott died in 1869, and Lucretia died in 1880. The bulk of the collection consists of material which was assembled at the time of the publication of Life and Letters by Anna Davis Hallowell in 1884. It includes original correspondence of Lucretia Mott and her husband, James M. Mott, with family and other reformers of their day. Also contains sermons, essays, and antislavery documents, and the diary of Lucretia Mott's trip to England to attend the World's Antislavery Convention of 1840.

Abstract:
The Society of Friends or Quakers (today the terms are synonymous) was founded in the middle of the seventeenth century in England by George Fox and others. The Friends Historical Library Miscellaneous Manuscripts is an artificial collection, established in the middle of the 20th century to store single and very small groups of manuscripts and documents, both originals and copies. The collection includes holdings relevant to antislavery, temperance, women's rights, penal reform, and other social concerns of Quakers in the United States and in England.
