Price family scrapbooks, 1843-1929 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The collection is composed of two family scrapbooks and acid-free copies. In 1894-1895, James M. Price researched information and correspondence concerning the time his aunt and uncle, Philip and Matilda Price, spent in the utopian community of New Harmony, Indiana, 1825-1826. Copies and some of his original correspondence were mounted into an old account book. In 1929, Susanna M. Price, his daughter, compiled a scrapbook containing family history, reminiscences, and photographs.

George Truman family papers, 1819-1914 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The Truman and Underhill families were prominent Philadelphia-area Quaker families with close ties to Swarthmore College and active in social concerns. The best known from these families is George Truman (1798-1877). He was a Quaker merchant and doctor and a recognized minister who visited Native American tribes in the American West and former Quaker settlements in the West Indies. He was one of the founders of Swarthmore College. This collection contains three volumes of George Truman's correspondence, pictures, family memorabilia, and other miscellaneous items (such as lesson books). The correspondance is primarily between George Truman and his wife, along with other family members such as their children, and other Friends or acquaintances.

Abstract:

Dorothy Harvey Leonard was a nurse and family historian until her death in 2007. The Harvey family descends through Jesse Harvey, the son of Michael and Elizabeth, who was married to Keziah Ward in Center Monthly Meeting, NC, in 1786. Related families include Carter, Tregelles, Thorp, Palmer, Sharpless, Hampton, and many others.
 This collection contains artwork, albums, slides, negatives, and photos of families, people, events, nursing, schools, places, homes, vacations, and animals.

Joseph C. Turnpenny scrapbook, 1833-1926 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The scrapbook has an embossed cover titled Joseph C. Turnpenny and contains a collection of approximately 60 mostly loose 19th century engravings, lithographs, full-sized silhouettes, photographs, post cards, and other prints, primarily of Quaker and Philadelphia scenes. It is labelled on the first page "Elizabeth Bunting Scrapbook," but the contents indicate that Joseph C. Turnpenny, a member of Spruce Street Monthly Meeting, was a collector, perhaps together with Elizabeth Bunting and later Joseph T. Bunting. The first page which has an 1833 newspaper clipping glued to a page with a mounted engraved copy of a George Washington letter, 1785, marked "Engraved for the Port Folio -- JE Hall." The contents include portraits of well-known Quakers including Elizabeth Fry, Benjamin Lay, and Isaac Hopper, as well Fred Harvey lithographs of Arizona and amateur silhouettes of Joseph Turnpenny and his wife Elizabeth dated 1892. Robert Bryan Michener and Edith Riner Michener. Kenya correspondence, 1930-1970 (bulk) 1920-1984 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The collection contains the correspondence of Robert Bryan Michener and Edith Riner Michener written while serving as Quaker missionaries in Kenya, East Africa, in the 1930s. Working under the auspices of the American Friends African Mission, a program of the Five Years Meeting, R. Bryan Michener served as a physician at the hospital in Kaimosi and then principal of the Boys' School. Edith Michener first taught English at the Boys' School and then organized the Girls' Boarding School. Their correspondence, photocopies and some originals, is mainly addressed to family members in Kansas and American Friends Board of Missions. It provides insight into their professional and personal lives in East Africa as well as the tensions within the mission system and colonial Africa of the period.

The collection contains correspondence between members of the Gideon and Mary W. (Willets) Frost family, Hicksite Quakers of Westbury, Long Island, New York. Gideon Frost was a successful merchant, philanthropist, and founder of Friends Academy at Locust Valley. Family members were active in Quaker concerns, especially education and abolition. The letters mention prominent Friends, family, and anti-slavery concerns.
