Overview and metadata sections
Sigma Xi is a scientific society for scientists and engineers, established at Cornell University in 1886. The name Sigma Xi (the Greek letters Σ and Ξ) stands for the Greek motto "Spoudon Xynones," or "Companions in Zealous Research."
Swarthmore's petition for chapter establishment was granted in 1923. Since then, the organization has provided funding for research projects, as well as countless lectures featuring prominent scientists. Any student who has produced a written document from a research project is eligible to join. According to the Swarthmore Sigma Xi website, "Disciplines that are covered by Sigma Xi society are: mathematics, statistics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, and certain subfields of psychology and linguistics."
This collection contains various materials, including records related to membership, research funding, lectures, meetings, events, photographs, and paraphernalia created by both the national organization and the local chapter.
The collection is arranged into three series: General Information (records created by the national organization), Swarthmore Chapter (records created by the local chapter), and Financial Records (created by the local chapter for both the national and local organization).
Transfer by Deborah Bergstrand, then president of Swarthmore Sigma Xi, 2018.
The collection was processed by Alison Sielaff in September of 2018.
