Abstract:

The scrapbook has an embossed cover titled Joseph C. Turnpenny and contains a collection of approximately 60 mostly loose 19th century engravings, lithographs, full-sized silhouettes, photographs, post cards, and other prints, primarily of Quaker and Philadelphia scenes. It is labelled on the first page "Elizabeth Bunting Scrapbook," but the contents indicate that Joseph C. Turnpenny, a member of Spruce Street Monthly Meeting, was a collector, perhaps together with Elizabeth Bunting and later Joseph T. Bunting. The first page which has an 1833 newspaper clipping glued to a page with a mounted engraved copy of a George Washington letter, 1785, marked "Engraved for the Port Folio -- JE Hall." The contents include portraits of well-known Quakers including Elizabeth Fry, Benjamin Lay, and Isaac Hopper, as well Fred Harvey lithographs of Arizona and amateur silhouettes of Joseph Turnpenny and his wife Elizabeth dated 1892. Also included is a Centennial Certificate (Thos. Jefferson Memorial Foundation) for Joseph T. Bunting, 1926.

Joseph Clarbour Turnpenny (1812-1892) was the son of John and Tabitha Turnpenny. The family was received at Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of the Southern District on certificate from Sheffield Monthly Meeting (England) in 1817, and they aligned with the Hicksites in the Separation, becoming members of Spruce Street Monthly Meeting. Joseph married Elizabeth Richardson in 1853 under the care of Wilmington Monthly Meeting. A druggist by occupation, he was active in the monthly and yearly meeting as well as a manager of Pennsylvania Hospital and active on the Friends Central School Committee. Other members of the Committee in 1852 were Elizabeth A. Bunting, widow of Samuel C. Bunting, and Deborah Fisher Wharton. The final document in the scrapbook is a 1926 membership certificate for Joseph T. Bunting. He was a member of Spruce Street Monthly Meeting, son of Samuel S. and Anna Bunting of Darby Monthly Meeting, and he transferred his membership to Darby Monthly Meeting in 1885. The Turnpennys both died in 1892 and are buried at Fair Hill.
