Miller-Dickey Family papers, 1786-1992 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection consists of papers of the Cross, Dickey, and Miller families of Chester County, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Baltimore, Maryland. John Miller and his wife, Margaret, emigrated from Scotland to Pennsylvania with their young daughter, Jane, in 1786. Miller, who was trained as a stone cutter in Scotland, developed a thriving marble business in Philadelphia; he also owned a farm in Great Valley, Pennsylvania. John was active in the Philadelphia community; he was an early member of the Pennsylvania Abolitionist Society, and a supporter of the Magdalene and Missionary Societies. The papers in this collection consist primarily of personal correspondence, business records, genealogical notes, diaries, and family photographs, of the Cross, Dickey and Miller families. Abstract:: "C.C. Hsiung Papers" contains correspondence on personal and academic matters, drafts and manuscripts of publications, syllabi, lectures, conference, colloquium and seminar documents, and mathematical notes documenting the career of Lehigh University Professor of Mathematics Chuan-Chih Hsiung who was the founder and the chief editor of the Journal of Differential Geometry. The collection also contains photographs, books and reprints of articles, and correspondence with Chinese scholars who were applying to American colleges. The collection's coverage is from 1937 to 2004; most of the documents are from 1952 to 1984.

Samuel R. Joyner artwork collection, 1947-2005 (inclusive)

Extent:: 5.8 linear feet
Abstract:: Samuel R. Joyner is among the small number of African American cartoonists in the United States. Born in Philadelphia in 1924, he received early attention and publication credits. Joyner enlisted in the United States Navy after graduating from high school during World War II. Upon his return to the United States, he enrolled into the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art (now University of the Arts). His experience with racism and discrimination, primarily in the Navy, served as the backdrop for the kind of artwork he desired to produce. Over the years he would become a recognized “visual voice” for African Americans as represented in mass-circulated magazines and newspapers. His work has been published in over 40 different publications. The Samuel Joyner collection includes photographs, original art work and sketches (and photocopies), posters, signs, newspapers and clippings, newsletters, one book of African American illustrations, and ephemera.
