Abstract:

The Office of the Executive Director is the lead office in charge of administering the business of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The Executive Director oversees the activities of the College of Physicians staff including staff of the Historical Medical Library, the Mütter Museum, the Francis Clark Wood Institute, and the Finance Department. The Executive Director also oversees the College functions of institutional advancement, communications, membership, and special events. The records in this collection document the everyday administrative activities and governance of the College, and span the years 1971 to 2005. Materials consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, pamphlets of outside organizations, financial reports, minutes, and agendas. This collection is divided into five series. Records of the Hemlock Society of Delaware Valley II, 1991-1995 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The Hemlock Society of Delaware Valley was a chapter of the national right-to-die organization The Hemlock Society. The mission of the Hemlock Society was "choice, dignity, and control at the end of life." The bulk of materials are society newsletters and news clippings about assisted suicide. This collection is separated into three series. The Chapter Papers series comprises miscellaneous papers associated with chapters of The Hemlock Society. Of note are papers detailing the merger of two Indiana Hemlock Societies and a report on cases of euthanasia, mercy killing, and suicide. The Events series contains program details of special events of the society. The Newsletters and Correspondence series houses local and national newsletters, as well as correspondence between Hemlock Society members. This collection was discovered during a survey in the summer and fall of 2015.

Charles Michael notes on lectures from Washington University of Baltimore, 1829-1831 (inclusive)

Abstract:

This collection contains two volumes of lectures notes of Charles Michael, a medical student at the Washington University of Baltimore, dating from 1829 to 1831. One volume covers notes from a course on midwifery taught by a Dr. Handy. The other volume contains notes from the theory and practice of medicine by J.H. Miller, M.D. Not much is known about Charles Michael. This collection was discovered during a survey in the summer and fall of 2015

Dixon family papers, 1842-1893 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Edward H. Dixon (1808-1880) was a New York City surgeon. Dixon earned his M.D. from Rutgers Medical College in 1829 or 1830, and then studied material medica, theory and practice, and therapeutics under Dr. John Francis; and surgery under Dr. Alexander Mott. Afterwards, Dixon accepted positions at the Deaf and Dumb Asylum and House of Refuge. Later, he opened his own practice as a consulting surgeon, as well as a private surgical hospital. He married his wife, Sarah S. Hart, in 1833, and they had one daughter, Julia, in 1836. Julia married Elias G. Brown in 1857, and they had several children. Sarah (Hart) Dixon died in 1883, and Julia (Dixon) Brown around 1893. The Dixon family papers span from 1842 to 1893 (although the bulk of material dates from the 1860s to the 1880s), and document the everyday life of women living in the late 19th-century, as well as the relationships between a grandfather and his grandchildren. Magnetic Medical Institute correspondence, 1900

Abstract:

Magnetic medicine was a popular (and likely ineffective) medical treatment during the 19th century. It was particularly prominent in the Midwestern United States after the American Civil War. This phenomenon has been attributed to an unsettled frontier atmosphere, a lack of trained physicians, and a tradition of self-treatment. Alternative treatments (or what might be considered quackery) flourished in this region of the United States. The Magnetic Medical Institute was located in Grand Rapids, MI, and likely founded and run by Dr. J. C. Batdorf, who described himself as a "scientific diagnoser and magnetic healer." Not much is known about the Institute.
