Richard J. H. Hatchett received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1835. He was born on 22 March, 1814, in Lunenburg County, Virginia, and died 25 June 1895 in Durham, North Carolina. Hatchett practiced medicine for forty years and served on the Board of Trustees at Hampden Sydney College, Virginia, from 1847 to 1852.

This collection contains a single letter, circa 1889, written by Richard J. H. Hatchett to a colleague about Hatchett's strong belief in bloodletting.
