Pamela Colman Smith collection, 1896-1900, 1896-1900 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Pamela Colman Smith was an author, illustrator and stage designer. Born in London, she spent most of her youth in England and Jamaica. She was educated at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, which she left in 1897. In 1898, she moved to New York City, where she began selling her illustrations and exhibiting her work in galleries. She returned to England in 1900, where she designed sets for the London stage, and continued to exhibit her artwork. A significant part of Smith's career consisted of illustrating children's books and collections of folk tales, ballads and verse. Her published works include Widdicombe Fair (1899), Annancy Stories (1899), The Golden Vanity and the Green Bed (1899), and Chim-Chim: Folk Stories from Jamaica (1905). Works by other authors that she illustrated include Christmas Carol, by Edwin Waugh (1898), and In Chimney Corners: Merry Tales of Irish Folk-lore, by Seumas MacManus (1899). Mary Ayer (Rousmaniere) diary, 1897-1900 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Mary Ayer was a member of Bryn Mawr's class of 1901. While at college, Ayer was involved in varsity basketball, Mandolin and Banjo Club, and class plays. After graduating from Bryn Mawr, Ayer pursued graduated studies at Radcliffe (1901-1902) and Simmons College (1905-1906). In 1910, she married John Rousmaniere, a graduate of Harvard Law School. Ayer died in 1954. Ayer's one volume diary spans her freshman through junior years at college, from 1897-1900. However, only the first two of these were spent at Bryn Mawr; Ayer passed her junior year at Radcliffe College before returning to Bryn Mawr for her senior year. Ayer's diary offers insight into student athletics and academics, social life, and variations between Bryn Mawr and Radcliffe.

Abstract:: This collection of papers that originated mostly from the Cox family of Oxmead, Burlington County, New Jersey, and the Parrish family of Maryland and Philadelphia, contains information on the religious, humanitarian, social, and economic influence of the Quakers in American life. Spanning two centuries from 1700 to 1900, the collection contains family and some business correspondence, personal and financial volumes, petitions, deeds, publications, prints and photographs, and materials from the Friends Association of Philadelphia.

Abstract:: Joseph Fell (1804-1887), the son of Dr. David and Phebe Schofield Fell, was a Pennsylvania Quaker teacher and farmer. In 1835 he married Harriet William, the daughter of Samuel and Sarah Watson Williams of Buckingham, Pa. He served in the State legislature in 1837-38 and as superintendent of the county schools. Joseph and Harriet Fell had five children: William W. (1836-1874), Emily Catherine who married William Seal in 1863; David Newlin (1840-1919) who married Martha Trego; Edward Watson (1843-1901) who married Elizabeth Matlack Kenderdine in 1867; and Lucy W. Fell, born 1847. Edward Watson and Elizabeth Kenderdine Fell had four children. The eldest was Edward Lawrence Fell (1867-1943) who married Esther May Willets. Both were Swarthmore College graduates, Class of 1888, and members of Green Street Monthly Meeting. This small collection consists of photographs of Fell family members. This collection consists of correspondence, writings and photographs documenting Capron's missionary work, dating from 1857 to 1886.
