Overview and metadata sections
Stephen H. Appleton (b. 1854) of Media, Pennsylvania, was editor of the local newspaper, Delaware County American and also worked as a professional photographer around the turn of the 20th century. He was a member of the local branch of the Freemasons (George W. Bartram Lodge No. 29 of Media) and was also a member of the Delaware County Historical Society.
Appleton was married to Deborah T. Haddock with whom he had several children, including Alfred Appleton and Susanna P. Appleton (1898-1977).
This collection consists of glass plate negatives photographed by Stephen H. Appleton of people and buildings, mostly located in Media and Delaware County, Pa. The negatives are on whole, half, and quarter plates, organized by size and the order in which Appleton took them. Appleton's handwritten inventory, covering only part of the collection, exists on-site.
Paper prints of some of Appleton's negatives are in the Media Historic Archives Commission photograph collection, circa 1880-1990.
Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2012-2014 as part of a project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.
In some cases, more detailed inventories or finding aids may be available on-site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact Media Historic Archives Commission directly for more information.
