British Gurkha Mission to Nepal photograph album, 1947 july-1948 january (inclusive)

Abstract:

Following Indian independence in 1947, the British and Indian armies agreed to divide the Gurkha regiments between the two armies. British, Indian, and Nepalese delegations met in Nepal from July 1947 to January 1948 in order to discuss the terms of service of the Gurkha soldier as well as specific rights granted to them in relation to religion, rates of pay, performance and conduct, and leave from duty. This photograph album, containing 90 photographs, documents the three delegations' tour through Nepal. The images, probably created by a British delegate of the Mission, are labeled and the album includes photographs of people, landscapes, and historical and religious sites.

This collection contains 47 notebooks, dating from 1824 to 1836, written by Claire Sallard (circa 1821-1896), which provide examples of the type of education received by prosperous young ladies in France in the 1820s and 1830s. With a focus on the skills of literary form, the notebooks contain short stories, moral speeches, diary entries, and a "cahier de bonne conduite" (a good conduct notebook).

William H. Helfand collection of medical quackery ephemera, 1736-2006, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:

The William H. Helfand collection of medical quackery ephemera contains prints that address the public perception of physicians and the practice of medicine across three centuries (1736-2006, with undated materials). A large number of cartoons from nineteenth century French satirical newspapers reveal that medical practices and symbols were used to visually express political sentiments. In this collection, medicine also emerges as a theme in imagerie populaire, inexpensive block prints mass-produced during the same period. Other aspects and eras of medicine are represented in the collection's portraits, advertisements, devotional images and artwork.

There are also a few postcards of Il Monte Carmelo (Mount Carmel) in Israel, a Holy Land site; Napoli in Italy; and the Museum of Jewish Ceremonial Objects at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, New York City.
