Abstract:
Gene-Ann Polk was a physician, hospital administrator, professor of pediatrics at Columbia University, and president of the Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society. She was involved with various organizations for Black women physicians in and around New York. The materials in this collection are related to Dr. Polk's education, her private practice, and her years at Harlem Hospital. The collection also includes materials Polk collected related to Black women physicians, and the records of the Susan Smith McKinney Steward Medical Society (SSMS).

Hahnemann University photograph collection, circa 1840-2004 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Hahnemann University Photograph Collection is an extensive collection that covers the people and buildings of Hahnemann from its beginnings in 1848 as the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania to 2004 as Hahnemann University Hospital. Much of the collection is a photographic record of the buildings that were used and constructed by the organization throughout its history. The photographs consistently span the lifetime of the school and hospital from the mid-1840s to turn of the twenty-first century. Shots include interiors, exteriors, construction sites, and aerial shots of the campus (and city). There are also a few shots of other homeopathic hospitals and schools in the nineteenth century. A significant portion of the collection visually documents the departments and medical instruments/equipment used by those departments. Abstract:
Hahnemann University’s long history began in 1848 with the founding of the Homeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania. Over the years, the institution evolved in many ways, eventually becoming Hahnemann University and, later, the Drexel University College of Medicine. In the mid- to late-twentieth century, with the decline of homeopathy, Hahnemann re-invented itself as a nationally known academic medical center with prominence in cardiac surgery and cardiology, oncology, transplantation, training of non-physician health professionals, community health, and community mental health. This expertise led to many firsts for Hahnemann, including international advances in cardiac surgery. Constantine Hering and Calvin B. Knerr family papers, 1820-1940 (bulk) 1820-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Dr. Constantine Hering (1800-1880), born and educated in Germany, immigrated to Philadelphia in 1833 and devoted his life to the study, practice and education of homeopathic medicine in the United States. As such, he is considered the father of homeopathy in America. Hering founded several schools and organizations devoted to teaching homeopathy, especially the North American Academy of the Homeopathic Healing Arts, aka the Allentown Academy, in 1836, and the Hahnemann Medical College of Philadelphia in 1848. Hering’s pupil and eventual son-in-law and professional assistant, Dr. Calvin B. Knerr, also practiced homeopathy. Knerr was integrally involved in the editing of two of Hering’s books and also devoted much time and effort to writing Hering’s biography, The Life of Hering. Dr. Florence Haseltine, MD, PhD is a biophysicist, licensed obstetrician-gynecologist and reproductive endocrinologist, writer, inventor, and advocate for women's health. The Florence Haseltine papers chronicle the career and personal life of Dr. Florence Haseltine and the Haseltine family. The records in this collection date from approximately 1802 to 2016, although the bulk of the records are from 1962 to 2014. This collection includes papers from Florence’s family, her work as a college student, her career as a research scientist, her various professional and organization activities, as well as her business and entrepreneurial efforts. Born and raised in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, Dr. Doris Bartuska graduated from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1954, where she also served her internship and residency. An endocrinologist, she joined the faculty in 1958, was an Associate Dean for Curriculum, President of the Medical Staff, and a member of the Board of Directors and President of the Alumni Association. Dr. Bartuska was Director of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism as well as the Endocrine Fellowship Training Program at Woman’s Medical College/Medical College of Pennsylvania. She was named Emeritus Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) at Drexel University College of Medicine in 1996. Dr. Bartuska passed away in 2013. The Black Women Physicians Project records contains documentation of the lives and careers of Black women in medicine, compiled by Margaret Jerrido, who served as an Archivist at the Medical College of Philadelphia. Started in the 1980s by Jerrido, BWPP is an artificial collection (a collection with materials from disparate sources intentionally arranged for research use) and includes not only Biographical Reference Files, but also oral histories, planning materials that supported BWPP, and photographs. Because the records are largely photocopies of materials from various times, BWPP covers a date range of 1807-2013, with the bulk of materials (especially original materials) covering 1971-1992

Agnes Gowdey papers, 1928-2002 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Dr. Agnes Gowdey graduated from Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1935, after attending Carroll College in Wisconsin. She was in general practice with a concentration in obstetrics for most of her career, practicing first in Philadelphia and later in Riverton, New Jersey. She had an ongoing relationship with the American Youth Foundation (AYF), especially their Camp Merrowvista. The collection documents this ongoing relationship with the camp and its champions. After retirement, Dr. Gowdey was very involved with elder care initiatives in Moorestown, N.J. The collection is most informative about Dr. Gowdey’s time as a student at Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, her early private practice in the 1940s, and her involvement with Camp Merrowvista. Dr. Gowdey’s most influential work in the areas of obstetrics, elder care, and sex education for young people, is strongly represented here. Abstract:
Barbara Gittings (1932-2007) was an active member of the LGBT rights movement from the 1960s until her death. She worked as editor of The Ladder: A Lesbian Review. In the early 1970s, she was instrumental in lobbying the American Psychiatric Association to declassify homosexuality as a mental illness. Kay Tobin Lahusen (b. 1930) is a photojournalist, editor, author of The Gay Crusaders, and an active member of the gay and lesbian rights movement. The Barbara Gittings and Kay Tobin Lahusen collection, 1955-2009, includes primarily printed materials relating to gay and lesbian issues and organizations, and audiovisual material that documents attitudes and strategies prevalent in the Homophile Movement in the 1960s and 1970s.

William Way (1942-1988) worked as the Executive Director of the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority and as an advocate for the Philadelphia LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community. The Bill Way collection, 1942-2004, is comprised of scrapbooks compiled by Way documenting his life, the LGBT community in Philadelphia, and City of Philadelphia redevelopment in the 1970s and 1980s. Kiyoshi Kuromiya papers on HIV/AIDS research and organizations, 1990-2002 (inclusive)

Kiyoshi Kuromiya (1943-2000) was a Philadelphia-based activist who worked to better the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS. He created the Critical Path AIDS Project to provide free internet access and information on HIV/AIDS treatment. The bulk of the Kiyoshi Kuromiya papers on HIV/AIDS research and organizations, 1990-2002, is comprised of newspaper clippings, scientific articles, conference materials, and flyers collected by Kuromiya on HIV/AIDS treatments, topics, and organizations. There are also some records from Kuromiya's Critical Path AIDS Project, Kuromiya personal papers, and records from Anna Forbes from the Working Group on HealthChoices and HIV.

Awbury Arboretum Association Cope family collection, 1791-2011 (inclusive)

Henry Cope purchased 40 acres of land in East Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1852 where he built a home for his growing family. Over the next 70 years, his descendants build 24 houses representing a variety of architectural styles. A portion of this land, now known as the Awbury Arboretum, was left to the City Parks Association in 1916 to protect it from development. The Awbury Arboretum Association Cope family collection, 1791-2011, encompasses several small collections donated by various descendants of the Cope family. It includes correspondence, deeds, financial records, journals, and photographs.

Established in 1792 by and for persons of African descent, the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is the first African American Episcopal Church in the United States. Nicholas Biddle (1786-1844) was one of the most prominent men in early 19th century America, best known as President of the Second National Bank of the United States. Many of his family members were also prominent to their contemporaries and to history, including Nicholas's brother, Commodore James Biddle (1783-1848), who served in the Navy for decades and worked to open up trade with Asia. The Biddle family papers, 1747-2011, consist largely of original manuscript documents from a number of Biddle family members, notably Nicholas Biddle (1786-1844), Commodore James Biddle (1783-1848), Letitia Glenn Biddle (1864-1950), Charles J. Biddle (1890-1972) and Katharine Legendre Biddle (1893-1973), and Nicholas Biddle, Jr. (1917-2013). In addition, there are some secondary-source materials pertaining to the Biddle family and the administration of Andalusia, the family's ancestral home.

John Bartram (1699-1777), the "Father of American Botany," created a botanic garden in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that is widely considered the first true botanic collection in North America. In 1891 the City of Philadelphia purchased his estate as a historic site, and the John Bartram Association was established in 1893 to help with the administration and interpretation of the property. The John Bartram Association records, 1911-2012, consist of records of the John Bartram Association, especially pertaining to its management of the Bartram's Garden site. The collection includes financial and administrative records, reports and architectural plans generated by consultants, photographs and slides, documentation of archaeological digs, and mailings of the Bartram Trail Society.

Byberry Monthly Meeting records, 1790-2002 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The first meeting house for members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in Byberry, Philadelphia was built in the 1690s. Byberry Monthly Meeting was formally established by Abington Quarterly Meeting out of Horsham Monthly Meeting in 1810, and is currently active as of 2011. Byberry Monthly Meeting records, 1790-2002, include records for the Meeting, Byberry Friends School, Byberry Meeting First Day School, and Byberry Nursery School and Kindergarten. The majority of records held at Byberry Library consist of more recent documentation of the Monthly Meeting, Nursery School, and Kindergarten, circa 1970-2000. These include meeting minutes, financial records, and photograph albums and scrapbooks of Meeting events and activities. Of the remaining collection, most materials pertaining to the Meeting prior to 1970 are photocopies, transcriptions, or facsimiles. There are, however, several original volumes of material from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Byberry Library Company records, 1876-circa 2000

Byberry Library Company was a subscription-based library in the Byberry section of Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was established on December 29, 1794. Although the stockholders were not exclusively members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), the Library was generally under Quaker management, and occupied the schoolhouse of the Byberry Friends Meeting for most of its existence. This collection dates from about 1876-2000 and includes scattered records from the Byberry Library Company, such as acquisition/donation records, inventories of books, minutes, and circulation records. The highlight of this collection is a volume, dated 1876-1945, with circulation records of subscribers.

Tindley Temple United Methodist Church records, circa 1900-2014

Tindley Temple United Methodist Church was founded in 1837 as the John Wesley Methodist Episcopal Church, and was later known as the Bainbridge Street Methodist Church and East Calvary Methodist Church before it was renamed after its influential pastor Charles A. Tindley in 1927. Charles Albert Tindley (1851-1933) became a pastor of the church in 1902 and vastly increased the size of the congregation during his ministry. He is nationally significant for his important role in the development of the African American gospel tradition. The Tindley Temple United Methodist Church records, circa 1900-2014, consist of membership records, church Trustee records, property and building-related documents, administrative papers, financial records, programs from church services and other events, recordings, photographs, and papers of and research on church reverends. Of note are a small amount of materials from Charles A. Tindley, including photographs of him and sermon outlines.

Albert LeCoff (born 1950) is a co-founder and the Executive Director of The Center for Art in Wood (formerly known as the Wood Turning Center) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since the mid 1970s, Albert has worked to promote the art of woodturning, woodworking, and the artists involved in these pursuits through developing programs at the Center, organizing conferences and exhibitions across the United States, and lecturing internationally. The Albert LeCoff early records of the Center for Art in Wood, 1982-2008, consist largely of slides of artworks and other materials that pertain to exhibitions, conferences, and symposia. Chadds Ford in Delaware County, Pennsylvania was historically a crossroads, first a fording point across the Brandywine River and later near the intersection of two train lines. Charlestown Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania is named for Charles Pickering, who was granted the land from William Penn that today makes up a large portion of the Township. Charlestown was the site of the Valley Forge General Hospital during World War II. Henry Howard Houston (1820-1895) was a prominent Philadelphia businessman and philanthropist influential in the development of Chestnut Hill. As a high-ranking executive for the Pennsylvania Railroad, he convinced the company to run a line west through Chestnut Hill, opening in 1884. As a property developer, he helped establish the affluent neighborhoods of Chestnut Hill and Germantown, and he donated a building and property in Chestnut Hill to the Philadelphia Cricket Club. The Henry H. Houston Estate collection, circa 1905-1996, includes correspondence and other materials concerning Philadelphia Cricket Club and the Houston estate. It features three estate ledgers, dated 1938, 1940, and 1951.

Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation is one of the oldest working colonial farms in Pennsylvania, with a unique focus on the "ordinary people" of the Revolutionary era. The Plantation is located in Ridley Creek State Park (Edgmont Township, Delaware County). It was founded by Bishop's Mill Historical Institute in 1973. The Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation records, circa 1973-2013, include materials that document its finances, administration, programs and visitation, site maintenance, and personnel. Of special interest are about a dozen logs from the staff and volunteers who worked as re-enactors, "housewives' journals," with daily entries recording programs and events. There are also numerous photographs and several maps and plans in the collection.

Dr. Robert P. Case, formerly a history professor at Neumann College, and Virginia M. "Ginny" DeNenno, long-time president of the Concord Township Historical Society, worked together on the two-volumes series Prosperity and Progress: Concord Township, Pennsylvania, 1683-1983 (Concordville, Pa. : Concord Township Historical Society). The first volume, authored by Case with assistance from DeNenno, was published in 1983; the second volume, co-authored by the pair, was published in 1997. The Dr. Robert P. Case and Virginia M. DeNenno book production files, circa 1980-1998, include their papers relating to the research, writing, and publication of the series. The bulk of the collection is property research and research notes, including photocopies of deeds, transcripts of wills, and other copies of primary-source documents.
