Overview and metadata sections

In 1969 the Rutgers Homophile League, the first openly homosexual organization in New Jersey and the second on a college campus nationwide, was founded by student Lionel Cuffie. Over time, the group evolved into the Queer Student Alliance at Rutgers University. In 2012, there were at least ten LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) student groups at Rutgers.

This collection is comprised of file drawers of scholarly articles, many specifically targeted for social workers working with LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) youth. The collection also contains subject files relating to various LGBT issues, with clippings, pamphlets/publications, reports, book catalog cards, and pins. There are also binders of materials on topics such as LGBT psychology, hate crimes, LGBT studies/biographies, LGBT people in the military/politics, and educating LGBT youth. There are files on various LGBT organizations and services local, national, and international. These materials include clippings, pamphlets, and newsletters. There are also a small number of photographs of LGBT literature displays created by the group and a VHS tape of the film "Serving in Silence."

Summary descriptive information on this collection was compiled in 2011-2012 as part of a pilot project conducted by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania to make better known and more accessible the largely hidden collections of small, primarily volunteer run repositories in the Philadelphia area. The Hidden Collections Initiative for Pennsylvania Small Archival Repositories (HCI-PSAR) was funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

This is a preliminary finding aid. No physical processing, rehousing, reorganizing, or folder listing was accomplished during the HCI-PSAR project.

In some cases, more detailed inventories or finding aids may be available on-site at the repository where this collection is held; please contact John J. Wilcox Jr. LGBT Archives of Philadelphia directly for more information.
