Abstract:: Founded in 1861, Spring Garden Street Methodist Episcopal Church's building at 20th and Spring Garden Streets in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was constructed in 1865. In 1986, there was a resolution to discontinue Spring Garden United Methodist Church, but its closing appears not to have happened until 1988. The Spring Garden Street United Methodist Church records, 1861-1988, consist of minutes of the corporation, trustee minutes, Quarterly Conference minutes, baptisms, marriages, and funerals.

Abstract:: Charles Godfrey Leland (1824-1903) was a humorist and folklorist from Philadelphia. The collection consists of fourteen illustrated letters written to George Henry Boker which document one year of Leland's trip to Europe from 1869 to 1870; transcriptions of the letters; and an article by donor and scholar Sculley Bradley about the collection.

Wistar Family papers, 1861-1950 (inclusive) 1861-1900 (bulk)

Abstract:: This collection contains letters and cards exchanged between various family members, including Elizabeth (Bettina) Vaux Wistar, Mary Emlen Wistar, and Frederic Vaux Wistar. Many of the letters were sent from Europe between 1893 and 1894. There is also an assortment of financial and legal papers. The section "Travel and Sightseeing Materials" is particularly noteworthy. It contains a journal written by Emma F. Wistar in which she recounts her 1866 trip to Niagara Falls, making special note of botanical specimens, including dried plant and flower samples. Additionally, there is a brief account by B.V. Wistar about his experience at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. The collection contains formal photographs taken by Philadelphia photography studios.

Thomas Burnside Morris Papers, 1861-2000 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Thomas Burnside Morris graduated from New York University in 1861 with a degree in civil engineering. He was a chief engineer of the Long Island Railroad, 1863; a division chief of the Panama Railroad, 1864-1865; a division chief of the Union Pacific Railroad, 1867-1869; and a division chief of the Northern Pacific Railroad, 1870-1874. He died in Oakland, California, on November 8, 1885. The collection consists primarily of material relating to Morris's role in the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad and the Northern Pacific Railroad.
