Helen Clements Kirk papers, 1881-1917 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Helen Clements Kirk was a student at Bryn Mawr from 1888-1892. She studied History and Economics. This collection consists of papers belonging to Helen and her family, particularly her mother, Emma Newbold Clements, and her father, Samuel Clements. Most of the collection consists of correspondence from Helen to her mother, which spans two decades, 1888-1908. In her letters from college, Helen writes about her social life, academics, professors, and events on campus. In letters written after college, from 1893 to 1908, she writes about Philadelphia social life and her new family. The fall of 1892, she married Edward Cameron Kirk and became a mother to his two children, Edith and Carrie. She and Edward had three girls of their own: Dorothy, Marcelle, and Barbara. Some of Dorothy's letters from when she was twelve and eighteen are also included. J. Hampton Barnes collection of autograph letters, 1804-1891 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The J. Hampton Barnes Collection of Autograph Letters consists of 37 documents, most which are letters written to Dr. David Hosack (1769-1835). After attending Columbia and Princeton, he began his medical practice in Alexandria, VA. He subsequently was Professor of Botany at Columbia and taught in the medical school. He was the attending physician at the Burr-Hamilton duel, a founder of Rutgers Medical College, a founder of Bellevue Hospital in New York City, and an author of numerous scientific works and biographies. The collection contains correspondence from a number of noteworthy people, such as Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Baron von Humboldt, and Sir Humphry Davy.

Edith Dabney (Ford) scrapbook, 1899-1903 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Edith Dabney Ford was a History major at Bryn Mawr who graduated in 1903. Her scrapbook consists of materials from all four years of her college career and is extremely dense and consists primarily of personal correspondence and notes/poems/signs etc. from friends. However, it also contains quite a few unique photographs and gives a broad view of undergraduate life at Bryn Mawr.

Ruth Emerson (Fletcher) scrapbook, 1890-1897 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Ruth Emerson majored in Greek and Latin, graduating from Bryn Mawr College in 1893. She did graduate work at Columbia College and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens in these areas, as well. She taught Latin, Greek, and History at the secondary school level. The Ruth Emerson (Fletcher) scrapbook houses the one volume scrapbook of Ruth Emerson, Bryn Mawr College class of 1893. The scrapbook, which ranges from 1890-1897, consists mostly of letters and poems to Ruth from friends and other personal memorabilia without a lot of context.

Alice B. Hammond scrapbook, undated, c. 1898

Abstract:: Alice Bradford Hammond graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1898 and later studied Greek and Latin at Yale. She was an expert linguist in Greek and Latin. She died in 1951. The Alice B. Hammond scrapbook consists of the Hammond's one volume scrapbook. The scrapbook is undated, and consists primarily of photographs.

Margaret Hilles (Johnson) scrapbook, 1890-1910 (inclusive)

Extent:: 1 volumes
Abstract:: Margaret Hilles was born in 1870. She went to secondary school in Wilmington and later attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1893. Her husband was a mining engineer, and she did a large amount of travelling until his death in 1919. Hilles was involved in a number of groups. She was active in Friends organizations and a founder of the Chester County Library Association. She was a member of the Downingtown Friend's Meeting and the Downingtown Auxiliary to Chester County Hospital. Hilles passed away in 1950. The Margaret Hilles Johnson scrapbook contains Johnson's one-volume scrapbook. The scrapbook contains material from roughly 1890-1910, but focuses on Hilles' four years at Bryn Mawr.

Rebecca Mattson Darlington scrapbook, 1894-1896 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Rebecca Mattson was from Breckenridge, Minnesota. She studied English and German at Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1896. After graduation, Mattson taught English and Latin at Miss Bardwell's School (1896-98), later serving as principal of the school (1898-1902). In 1901, she married Philip Jackson Darlington and had three children. The Rebecca Mattson Darlington scrapbook comprises Mattson's one volume scrapbook and covers her last two years at Bryn Mawr, from 1894-1896. It provides a unique view of the early days of Bryn Mawr.

Jane M. Oppenheimer papers, 1859-1981 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Jane M. Oppenheimer was a biologist and science historian. She graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1932 with a degree in biology, later taking a Ph.D. from Yale in zoology. She taught biology at Bryn Mawr from 1938-1980, and also designed an experiment for NASA in the 1970s. This collection, which ranges from 1849 to 1981, includes various materials related to NASA experiments and some of Oppenheimer's class materials.

Marion Parris scrapbook, 1897-1906 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Marion Parris Smith was a student at Bryn Mawr, who later became a Professor of Economics at the college. Her scrapbook spans from 1897 to 1906 and gives an excellent overview of the undergraduate and post-graduate life of a Bryn Mawr student.
