Dr. Ephraim A. Speiser, chairman of the Department of Oriental Studies at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School, was a noted archaeologist and authority on the life and literature of the ancient and modern Near East. He received an M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1923 and a Ph.D. from Dropsie College in 1924. This collection consists of two notebooks of Ephraim A. Speiser during his time as a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania in 1921.

Abstract:
The Safford family descends from the Buell and Norton families, who emigrated to America prior to the American Revolution. This volume, entitled Fanny Sententious and dating circa 1850 to 1907, consists of newspaper clippings of poetry, religious tracts, and family history for the Buell, Norton, Safford and Squires families. There are some pressed flowers and a few photographs, but the vast majority of the material is clippings from unidentified and undated newspapers. The volume is divided into two main segments, poetry and family history.

Dr. William Leo Schreiber, Jr., M.D., D.D.S. (1878-1949) was a 1901 graduate of the School of Dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania, studying under Dr. James Truman (1826-1914), a professor of operative dentistry, dental histology, dental pathology, therapeutics, and materia medica, as well as the dean of the Dental Department from 1883 to 1895. This volume contains typewritten and manuscript notes from Dr. James Truman's materia medica lectures.

Abstract:
An oversize volume probably created during the nineteenth century in Florence, Italy by a member of the Peruzzi family. "Album de stampine antiche" is written on a decorative label pasted on the cover. The volume contains a scrapbook comprised of cutouts from books of over 350 woodcuts and engravings of decorative printers' marks including borders, initials, head-pieces, tail-pieces, portions of title pages, and vignettes. The books represented in the volume were published from 1569 to 1790.

The lecture notes themselves are not limited to Materia Medica in the strictest sense, in that they also include some information about physiology, pathology and therapeutics. The notebook is briefly inscribed by Dr. Edward Cutbush (1772-1843) an officer and surgeon in the United States Navy.

The term 'Materia Medica' refers to the collected body of knowledge of medicinal substances and their therapeutic applications.

A handwritten diary, by J. H. Slack of Philadelphia. The volume, probably bound by Slack, was written in 1858 and recounted his trip to England in spring an summer of 1856. Slack stated in the preface of the diary " [I] wrote with a double purpose, first as a souvenir of my voyage for my own gratification, and secondly to afford pleasure to my large circle of friends to whom my private journal would be inaccessible."

This collection of about sixty handwritten actors' role books (1870-1878, undated) provides a glimpse into the world of nineteenth century theater in the United States. The role books seem to have belonged to the actor Philip Augustus Anderson though some were copied by, or on behalf of, other performers of the day including Lotta Crabtree, Laura Keene, Annie Lewis, John Lester Wallack, John Edward McCullough, Joseph Proctor and Lucille Western. Nearly all of the role books are annotated with production notes.

It is divided into thirteen sections, each one being defined by a geographic region. "Photographs of Costa Rican plants" is a two-volume album compiled by biologist Amelia Smith Calvert (1876-1965). Each page of the album features a black and white photograph of a plant native to Costa Rica, with up to a paragraph of type-written text that provides the Latin and common names of the plant, its appearance and characteristics, the specific location where the specimen was found, and the date on which the photograph was taken. Calvert conducted this research on a 1909 to 1910 expedition to Costa Rica with her husband, entomologist Philip Calvert.

Kanji Dwarkadas papers, 1914-1968, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:
The papers of Kanji Dwarkadas, an Indian politician and activist born in 1892, contain correspondence and writings by both Dwarkadas and some of his contemporaries, dating from 1914 to 1965. Active in Mumbai (then Bombay), Dwarkadas began his career alongside Annie Besant, Jawaharlal Nehru and Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the Indian Home Rule movement. Letters to and from these individuals and many other important figures in twentieth century Indian politics are included in this collection, along with a number of interviews conducted by Dwarkadas. Beginning in the 1920s, Dwarkadas was actively involved in organizations to promote social welfare in Mumbai, such as the Prostitution Inquiry Committee and Children's Aid Society (meeting minutes, resolutions and reports from these and other groups are included in the collection). Dwarkadas withdrew from politics in 1933 and focused his energies on labor organization and worker's rights.

The Harry Fields Gallery of the Sculptures of Joe Brown was added shortly after the death of Dr. Harry Fields in 1986. The Lloyd P. Jones Gallery Photographic Collection consists of professional photographs documenting the galleries and sculptures while it was located at the Gimble Gymnasium.
