Abstract:
Papers of the Jabez Jenkins family of Pennsylvania, 1829-1849. Includes "On board the Packet Ship George Washington Capt. Holdrege Liverpool to New York 1833: Some Recollections of England &c." 1833, manuscript Recollections of travel in England and Scotland in 1833 by Jabez Jenkins. Jenkins stopped for a relatively short time in England, on his way home to Philadelphia from Canton. Observations were largely of architecture and industry in London, Birmingham, Staffordshire, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. His postscript reflects on the differences between Americans and the British. Also of interest is a manuscript entitled "Tea and the Chinese" detailed notes on the differences between varieties of Chinese tea and its preservation. The section of "Miscellaneous Remarks" is entered between two passages on tea, and includes observations on the government, education, class structure, and personal appearance of the Chinese. Abstract:
Richard Price's letters to fellow Hicksite Quaker John Watson provide a rich account of the Hicksite-Orthodox Separation with references and comments on many of the personalities involved: Elias Hicks, William Wharton, Jonathan Evans, as well as visiting Quaker ministers including George Truman, Lucretia Mott, Ann Jones, Mary and Susan Cox, and Martha Smith. Price also wrote a detailed account of the Proceedings of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, 1848. The collection contains a small number of other correspondents including Benjamin Hanna who described the split in Ohio Yearly Meeting.

Abstract:
This collection includes the journal of Ruth Anne Hillborn from 1864-1868. She relates events concerning the emancipation of enslaved people, the U. S. Civil War, and the Presidency of Abraham Lincoln. She also describes Lucretia Mott and her ministry. This collection also includes miscellaneous poetry, a facsimile letter to the Women's Aid Association of Philadelphia about efforts in freedman's relief, a letter from John Bailey on Quaker ministry, and extracts from an account of the death of George F. White.

Abstract:
The collection contains miscellaneous manuscripts collected by Paul Rodebaugh. It includes: drafts of letters by an unknown author, 1844-1849, which express support for abolition and discuss contemporary U.S. politics; an anonymous Quaker journal of an 1817 trip from Philadelphia to Ohio; an undated journal of a sea and river journey from Philadelphia to Europe and then from Florida to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; and a small number of miscellaneous letters involving the Dilworth and Sharpless families.

Anna W. Stout correspondence received, 1864-1891 (-1886-1891) (inclusive)

Abstract:
The collection contains correspondence received by Anna W. Stout who attended the Preparative Department at Swarthmore College from 1884 to 1886 and then moved to Grand Meadow, Minn. Five letters are from Albert M. Johnson; four from Arabella Carter; and a single letter (1886) is from Alice Bowman Comly at Swarthmore which mentions improvements at the College made on the observatory and a new track and grandstand. The bulk of the letters (18) are from her cousin Frank W. Hibbs, a student at the Naval Academy at Annapolis who became a Navy officer. There also is an 1864 letter from William M. Weckerly to Samuel R. Stout that informs him of his acceptance into a fraternal society in Philadelphia.

Balderston Family Papers, 1853-1949 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The collection contains correspondence of the family of C. Canby Balderston, a prominent Quaker and businessman. He served with the Friends Relief Service and the Relief Commission for Belgium during WWI and both of his sons, Frederick Emery Balderston and Robert W. Balderston, were COs in WWII, working as ambulance drivers. Frederick E. Balderston (1923-2007) married Judith Braude (1926-1993) in 1949. A significant part of the collection consists of her childhood and college correspondence with her parents. It particularly reflects details of Swarthmore College students life, 1942-1946. Of special interest are the letters that Canby Balderston sent to his mother from France and Belgium, 1917-1919. Also included in the collection is correspondence of C. Canby Balderston's parents, John Lloyd Balderston and Anna Elizabeth (Marshall) Balderston, Quakers of Kennett Square, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Lippincott Family Papers, 1752-2010 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Horace Mather Lippincott (1877-1967) was a Quaker editor and historian. The collection contains his speeches and writings on topics primarily concerning the Society of Friends and the history of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Of particular interest is the scrapbook he compiled in 1946 of papers and photographs of the 1913-1914 Joint Group which met weekly to study the Separation in the Society of Friends, along with other papers on the topic and on the first joint meeting of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings in 1946. The collection includes genealogical research by Horace Mather Lippincott and his brother George E. Lippincott, deeds, and some family papers.

Abstract:
Alice C. Paxson Hadley (1857-1919) was the daughter of Frederick and Lydia Betts Paxson, Philadelphia Hicksite Quakers. She was a founding member of the Thread and Needle Society, a social and charitable club of young Friends. Alice kept a diary that recorded events and meetings of the group 1873 to 1880 which were transcribed by her granddaughter, and she collected memorabilia and speeches she presented.

Abstract:
This collection is composed of the draft manuscript of the memoirs and journal of Edward Hicks and related miscellaneous papers. Included are his drafts of the first pages of the memoirs, photocopies of letters and sermons of Hicks relating to the Hicksite Separation, abolition, and Quaker spirituality. Also included are a typescript copy of Samuel Johnson's letter to Edward Hicks on slavery, the original of Hicks' responses, and a letter from Isaac Parry to Benjamin Ferris after the death of Edward Hicks concerning the publication of the memoirs.
