Biddle family Papers, 1793-1951 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains the papers of Philadelphia Quaker Owen Biddle (1737-1799), his son, Clement Biddle (1778-1856), and numerous descendants. Owen Biddle, a scientist and merchant, was a member of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting and helped in the establishment of Westtown School (1799). Owen Biddle's papers, 1772-1793, (Series 1) include correspondence, and journals, some of which relate to his Revolutionary War activities. Three of his letterbooks, 1778-1779, have been microfilmed. The collection contains correspondence, journals, letterbooks, and account books, together with other manuscript material reflecting the social and cultural life and religious activities of a prominent Quaker family of Pennsylvania and Delaware. Papers of Lucy Biddle Lewis (1861-1941) are important for association with the women's suffrage movement and for early activities of the American Friends Service Committee. Taylor-Thomson Family Papers, 1817-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Taylors and Thomsons were Quakers from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, who married into the Knight, Clothier, and Shoemaker families. This collection includes correspondence, copybooks and albums, account books, family photographs, and miscellaneous clippings. Of particular interest is a large collection of deeds and some late 19th and early 20th century travel diaries.

George B. Jackson (George Bement) Family Papers, 1694-1986 (inclusive)

Abstract:: George B. Jackson, Swarthmore College Class of 1921, was a New York Quaker businessman. A member of New York Monthly Meeting, he was interested in family history and compiled the collection which contains farm daybooks of his great grandfather James M. Jackson of Quakertown and the memoirs of his grandfather, William Morris Jackson, Quaker businessman, reformer, and Trustee of Swarthmore College. The collection also contains genealogical information on the Jackson, Bacon, Chapin and Morris families, as well as personal correspondence and other papers.

Friends' Home for Children, 1881-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Friends' Home for Children ("Friendly Acres") was established in 1881 in Philadelphia by Hicksite Quakers. The Home was a residential facility for orphans and other children in need, modeled on a homelike environment rather than the large institutional more typical of the era. The Home was administered by a Board of Managers which originally was composed entirely of members of the Society of Friends. Eventually it became a summer camp, "Camp Sommerdale," a summer facility for the children. While maintaining ties to the Society of Friends, the Home became non-sectarian over the years. As attitudes towards the care of children changed and costs soared, it was decided in 1979 to phase out the residential program, and the name was changed to Friendly Acres Community Services with its mission focused on community programs, such as day care and senior services. Norman Walton Swayne Family Papers, 1733-1987 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Swayne family were Quakers of southern Chester County, Pennsylvania. Caleb Swayne was a farmer and tanner, and his son, Benjamin, also operated a tan yard and conducted a school for boys, the London Grove Boarding School. Evan Thomas Swayne also taught at London Grove, but moved to the Eaton Institute, a boarding school for girls in Kennett, after 1865. His son, Edward Swayne, had a greenhouse business and wrote poetry. Edward's sister, Anna Belle, was a photographer before her marriage to Albert Taylor Jackson. Edward's son, Norman Walton Swayne, attended Swarthmore College and then taught at the George School; he was also the family genealogist. The collection includes genealogical research, correspondence, poetry and other writings, commonplace books, deeds and financial records, and miscellaneous materials. Stephen Cary student materials, 1879 - ca. 1990s (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection consists of six items, four of which are booklets and two of which are sets of photos. The booklets include a handbook presented to freshmen in September 1936 by Haverford College's Student Association, of which Stephen Cary was a chairman; a booklet describing Haverford's aims and characteristics from 1879; the Haverford Athletic Annual Class book from 1900; and a booklet called "Continuation of Short History of '37" from 1942, which lists the members of the class of 1937 and their post-college accomplishments and paths. The photos in the collection are photos of Stephen Cary with various sports teams at Haverford in the late 1980s and early 1990s and a photo from a reunion of the class of 1937 taken in front of Roberts Hall, presumably 5 or 10 years after their graduation.

Abstract:: The Taylor Family Papers Addition primarily contains correspondence, other printed materials, and photographs related to William Nicholson Taylor who was born June 22, 1882 to Frank Hendrickson Taylor (1855-1943) and Rebecca "Bessie" Nicholson Taylor (1857-1944) and his family. The collection includes materials belonging to his wife, Gertrude Christine Duret de Brie (1897-1983), their three children, Constance Alix (1921), Benjamin de Brie "Brie" (1923), and Marie-Celine "Mimi" (1925), and other family members.

Abstract:: The collection contains family correspondence (4 ALsS), genealogical notes, and bible records. It includes family correspondence received by Rebecca Clark, 1804-1806, before her marriage to John Humphrey. One letter is from her sister Elizabeth and the other letters were written by her mother Bathsheba Clark. Bathsheba mentions caring for a grandchild with smallpox and various needlework projects. The genealogical information includes pages from a family bible, research on the Allen, Clark, and Elten families, much of which is consolidated into a family tree by Richard J. Allen, Jr. (1860-1935), an older brother of William C. Allen.

Richardson-Yarnall family papers, 1722-1962 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains personal papers, primarily correspondence, of members of the Richardson and Yarnall families, Pennsylvania Quakers who emigrated to America in the 1680s. The families were united by the marriage in 1816 of Nathaniel Richardson and Hannah Yarnall of Byberry. Of special significance are the diaries of Quaker ministers Peter Yarnall (1754-1798) and his second wife, Hannah Haines Thornton Yarnall (1765-1822) and their correspondence with family and fellow ministers. The papers reflect the daily life and concerns of members of two prominent families in southeastern Pennsylvania from the 18th through much of the 20th centuries.
