Awbury Arboretum Association Cope family collection, 1791-2011 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Henry Cope purchased 40 acres of land in East Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1852 where he built a home for his growing family. Over the next 70 years, his descendants build 24 houses representing a variety of architectural styles. A portion of this land, now known as the Awbury Arboretum, was left to the City Parks Association in 1916 to protect it from development. The Awbury Arboretum Association Cope family collection, 1791-2011, encompasses several small collections donated by various descendants of the Cope family. It includes correspondence, deeds, financial records, journals, and photographs.

Thomas Shipley Brown papers, 1920-2011 (inclusive)

Extent:: 6.5 linear feet
Abstract:: Thomas Shipley Brown (1912-2011) of Cheltenham Pennsylvania, was an active member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) who wrote and taught widely about Quaker thought, life, and practices. He graduated from Westtown School, a prominent Quaker boarding school (West Chester, Pa.) in 1929 and taught Bible, Latin, and English there for much of his life. He was involved with a number of other Quaker organizations including Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Friends Council on Education, the American Friends Service Committee, and London Yearly Meeting. The Thomas Shipley Brown papers, 1920-2011, is largely made up of Thomas Shipley Brown's writings on Quakerism and materials from his involvement with several Quaker organizations, especially Quaker educational institutions (including Westtown).

Howard Haines Brinton and Anna Shipley Cox Brinton papers, 1859-2005 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Howard Haines Brinton and Anna Shipley Cox Brinton were 20th-century Quaker educators and prolific authors whose areas of expertise included the physical sciences and the Classics. Notably, they also worked for the American Friends Service Committee in Europe, for Friends Center in Tokyo, Japan, and as directors of Pendle Hill, an adult study center in Wallingford, PA. They were both recorded ministers in the Religious Society of Friends. This collection also contains materials of other Brinton, Bean, Cox and Shipley Family members.

Stephen G. Cary papers, 1930-2002 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Stephen G. Cary graduated from Germantown Friends School in 1933 and from Haverford College in 1937. He earned a master's degree in international administration from Columbia University in 1943. Between 1946 and 1969, Cary worked for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), and was the chairman of the AFSC from 1979 to 1991. Cary was a member of the Haverford College Board of Managers from 1955 to 1969. In 1969, he joined the staff as vice president of development. He was acting president of Haverford from 1977 to 1978, and served as senior vice president of the College from 1979 to 1981. This is a collection of his professional and personal papers. Materials include documents related to the American Friends Service Committee, Haverford College, and the Clarence and Lilly Pickett Endowment for Quaker Leadership. Abstract:: The McNeil Center for Early American Studies was founded in 1978 as the Philadelphia Center for Early American Studies with a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The Center's mission is to "promote basic research in all areas of early American history and culture" through fellowships, seminars, assistance with publication of research, and other special projects. Fritz and Karoline Solmitz papers, 1929-2006 (inclusive)

Extent:: 4 linear ft.
Abstract:: Fritz Solmitz (1893-1933) was an early and outspoken leader in the opposition to Nazism, an editor of a Social Democratic newspaper in Lübeck and a member of the City council. Because of his active opposition to the Nazis, and probably because he was a Jew, he died of mistreatment in a German prison shortly after Hitler came to power. Karoline Somitz (1893-1966) was, like her husband, active in civic affairs. Much of the collection contains letters and photographs, some translated from German.

Abstract:: This collection contains architectural drawings, project and office records, and photographic material related to the work of architects and professional partners, Paul M. Cope, Jr. and H. Mather Lippincott. Projects with the most extensive holdings include the NYU Art Conservation Center, Friends Neighborhood Guild House (1961-1965), Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Friends Center Complex (1971-1979), and the Fred W.
