Fritz and Karoline Solmitz papers, 1929-2006 (inclusive)

Extent:: 4 linear ft.
Abstract:: Fritz Solmitz (1893-1933) was an early and outspoken leader in the opposition to Nazism, an editor of a Social Democratic newspaper in Lübeck and a member of the City council. Because of his active opposition to the Nazis, and probably because he was a Jew, he died of mistreatment in a German prison shortly after Hitler came to power. Karoline Somitz (1893-1966) was, like her husband, active in civic affairs. Much of the collection contains letters and photographs, some translated from German.

Kaltenbach Family Correspondence, 1933-1941 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection consists primarily of letters written by John E. Kaltenbach to his parents, Edward C. and Ethel Kaltenbach, from Wesleyan University, Yale Divinity School, and while working as the acting director for the Scattergood Hostel for European Refugees in Iowa. Also a small number of letters from his sister, Linda Kaltenbach, while a student at Swarthmore College.

Elizabeth Pearsall Frazier Family Papers, 1769-1914 (bulk 1807-1848) (inclusive)

Abstract:: This small collection of Quaker family papers appears to have been collected and preserved by Elizabeth Pearsall Frazier (1869-1957) and her daughter, Elizabeth P. Frazier (b. 1902). They include family genealogy, some correspondence, manuscript writings, financial papers, two wills, and reference material. The Pearsall side and its allied families, especially Parrish, were Quakers of long standing. Prior to 1800 the Pearsalls were a New York family, but after that they intermarried with Philadelphia Friends and made their homes in the Philadelphia area. There were strong ties with Burlington, NJ, and some of its Quaker families, including the Dillwyns and their relations. The bulk of this collection dates between 1807 and 1848. Marion Bromley and Ernest Bromley Papers, 1920-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Marion Coddington Bromley and Ernest Bromley were active members of the Society of Friends, absolute pacifists, war tax resisters, and worked for racial integration in the United States. They are best remembered as founders of the Peacemakers, and as war tax resisters.

Dorothea E. Woods Papers, 1951-2001 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Dorothea Eleanor Woods was a Quaker who joined the World YWCA in 1957 and worked for ten years in development of youth and adult education programs. In the 1970s she was a pioneer researcher and writer about child soldiers.

Allen and Roberts Family papers, 1846-1931 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Primarily the letters of the interconnected Philadelphia-area Quaker families, Allen and Roberts, in the period 1846-1931. The a large potrion of letters were are from Sarah H. Roberts Allen, Susan Janney Allen, and Lillie Allen, as well as Lizzie Roberts, though there are a considerable number from Samuel Allen, inventor of some agricultural tools as well as the "flexible flyer" sled.

Jay Worrall's Research Notes for The Friendly Virginians: America's First Quakers, 1990-1994 (these dates are only based on the publication date of the friendly virginians, and are not factual, as there are no available dates) (inclusive)

Abstract:: Jay Wesley Worrall Jr. (1916-2010) was born in Pennsylvania and graduated from Haverford College in 1937. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. In 1942, he married Carolyn Randal. After the war, he worked as a marketing manager and joined the Religious Society of Friends as a member of the Reading Meeting. He served again in the military during the Korean War. He was an active participant in the civil rights movement and worked to assist prisoners in reentering society. After his retirement, he wrote The Friendly Virginians: America's First Quakers, regarded as the most comprehensive history of the Quakers in Virginia from colonial to modern times. The collection consists of hand-written index cards contained in 13 boxes comprising information gained through research by Jay Worrall Jr. on Quaker families and individuals and Quaker Meetings in Virginia, as well as a bibliography, exhaustively researched by Worrall toward his 1994 book The Friendly...(see more)

Abstract:: Richard Mead Atwater (1844-1922) was the son of Stephen Atwater and Mary Weaver, both of whom were Quaker. This collection is comprised of Atwater's diary, 1862; letters concerning Brown University; club memberships and letters concerning the memberships and autobiographical remarks written in 1917 as well as an earlier biographical sketch.

Smiley family papers, 1885-1983 (inclusive) 1885-1930 (bulk)

Abstract:: In 1883, Quakers Albert Keith Smiley and his brother Daniel Smiley organized the first annual conference to discuss assistance to Native Americans at their estate at Lake Mohonk in New York state. These conferences were widely attended by specialists in various fields, as well as important officials. Only later were Native Americans represented. The concern to "uplift" was also directed at Filipino, Hawaiian, African American and Puerto Rican peoples, though attention at the conferences was primarily focused on Native Americans.

Elizabeth Gray Vining papers, 1897-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Elizabeth Gray Vining (1902-1999) was an author of children's books and served as the tutor to the crown prince of Japan, Akihito, from 1946 to 1950. The collection consists of correspondence, materials regarding books authored by Vining, articles, lectures and addresses, photographs, and information documenting her and her family's lives.
