Abstract:
William N. Jennings (1860-1946) was a photographer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania best known for being credited with the first successful photograph of lightning and his work in aerial photography. William N. Jennings scrapbook, photographs, and negatives, 1882-1937, consist of Jennings's scrapbook documenting his efforts to photograph lightning, including prints of the first photograph of lightning, as well as photographs, film negatives, and glass plate negatives of people at street scenes in Philadelphia, PA and nearby areas. There is also one oversized item consisting of mounted images of lightning.

Eadweard Muybridge Collection, 1870-1981 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Eadweard Muybridge is a noted photographer who began his studies of animal locomotion in 1872 while trying to settle a bet for railroad tycoon Leland Stanford. In 1883 several important Philadelphians attended a meeting in the office of the provost of the University of Pennsylvania, and decided to provide Muybridge with the grounds of the Veterinary Hospital and a $5,000 advance to begin work on the landmark study, Animal Locomotion. This study, completed in 1887 and published under the sponsorship of the University, would prove to be of great use to artists, anatomists, physiologists, and athletes. The Eadweard Muybridge Collection documents his photographic career and the contributions he made to motion pictures. Documentation relating Muybridge's Animal Locomotion study, done under the auspices of the University of Pennsylvania, represents the bulk of this collection.

Delaware County Historical Society photograph collection, circa 1870-1990

Abstract:
Delaware County was the first section of Pennsylvania to be settled by Europeans, specifically Swedes in 1643. It was in the city of Chester, the original county seat of Delaware County, that William Penn and the General Assembly of Pennsylvania adopted Penn's "Great Law of Pennsylvania," which granted the right to vote, citizenship, freedom of religion and trial by jury to all settlers. Located adjacent to Philadelphia, Delaware County's suburban population grew rapidly in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Delaware County Historical Society photograph collection, circa 1870-1990, consists largely of original photographs, with some photocopies and copies of lithographs and prints, of local people, organizations, and events. There are also glass and film negatives, postcards, slides and photograph albums.

Joseph C. Turnpenny scrapbook, 1833-1926 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The scrapbook has an embossed cover titled Joseph C. Turnpenny and contains a collection of approximately 60 mostly loose 19th century engravings, lithographs, full-sized silhouettes, photographs, post cards, and other prints, primarily of Quaker and Philadelphia scenes. It is labelled on the first page "Elizabeth Bunting Scrapbook," but the contents indicate that Joseph C. Turnpenny, a member of Spruce Street Monthly Meeting, was a collector, perhaps together with Elizabeth Bunting and later Joseph T. Bunting. The first page which has an 1833 newspaper clipping glued to a page with a mounted engraved copy of a George Washington letter, 1785, marked "Engraved for the Port Folio -- JE Hall." The contents include portraits of well-known Quakers including Elizabeth Fry, Benjamin Lay, and Isaac Hopper, as well Fred Harvey lithographs of Arizona and amateur silhouettes of Joseph Turnpenny and his wife Elizabeth dated 1892.
