Hartshorne Family papers, 1797-1957 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Papers include correspondence of thirty-two members and relatives of the Hartshorne family. -Of special interest are the medical notes, articles, and correspondence, 1819-1845, of Joseph Hartshorne, M.D. These are noteworthy because of his many innovation in surgery, such as the use of animal ligatures, plus his detailed descriptions of treatments for various ailments. -The correspondence of Anna C. Hartshorne covering her missionary work in Japan -Henry Hartshorne's "Letters from Japan," printed in the Friend Review, 1893-1894, plus sermons, etc., given by him while in Japan with Anna, 1893-1897. -The bulk of the collection consists of the correspondence, medical papers, literary works, etc., of Henry Hartshorne, M.D., son of Joseph and father of Anna. -also include genealogical material on the Bonsall, Hartshorne, Saunders, Yarnall, and Cope families as well as photographs.

Herbert S. Williams papers, 1908-1950 (inclusive) 1917-1919 (bulk)

Abstract:: This collection is principally composed of correspondence from U.S. Army Veterinary Corps Lieutenant Colonel Herbert S. Williams (1881-1950) to his family members, and in particular his sister Emily, nicknamed "Bon." The bulk of these letters were written during Williams's service in the U.S. Army Expeditionary Forces over the following periods: 1908 to 1909, in which Williams was stationed in Cuba and Fort Myer, Texas; 1916-1917, in which he was deployed to Mexico as part of the Mexican Expedition; and 1917 to 1919, in which he was deployed to Europe during World War I with the 12th Field Artillery Regiment. The collection also contains some limited correspondence from Williams to family members after his retirement and up to his death in 1950, as well as some official communications relating to his military service. This collection may best serve researchers interested in family correspondence during military deployment.

Northwestern University Woman's Medical School records/Chicago Woman's Medical College, 1870-1924, 1947

Abstract:: The Woman’s Hospital Medical College of Chicago was founded in 1870 by Mary H. Thompson (1829-1895) and Dr. William Heath Byford (1817-1890) in order to provide equal education opportunities for female medical students in the Chicago area. In 1879, the name of the medical school was changed to the Woman’s Medical College of Chicago; and in 1892, it was taken over by the Northwestern University and renamed the Northwestern University Woman’s Medical School. Over the next ten years, financial difficulties arose and in 1902, the medical school was dismantled. The Woman’s Clinical Dispensary, “a working corps of clinical teachers and assistants” who held clinics, survived until 1907. This collection documents the Chicago Woman’s Medical College and its transitions to the Northwestern University Woman’s Medical School from 1870 to 1945, with the bulk of the material created from 1870 to 1924. Lida Poynter collection on Dr. Mary E. Walker, circa 1850-1946

Abstract:: The Lida Poynter collection on Dr. Mary E. Walker consists of Poynter’s unpublished manuscript and research notes on the life of Dr. Mary E. Walker. Mary E. Walker (1832-1919) was a physician who served as a surgeon during the Civil War. She was awarded the Medal of Honor for her service and remains the only woman to have received the Medal. Throughout her life, she wrote, lectured and taught on medicine, dress reform, suffrage, and women’s rights, in general. In addition to Poynter's manuscript and research notes, this collection features correspondence to and from Mary Walker, correspondence to and from Lida Poynter, and photographs of Mary Walker.

Harold A. Budke World War II photograph album of India, 1945-1946 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Captain Harold A. Budke was a medic in the United States Army, posted in Calcutta from 1945 to 1946. The photographs in his album document his experiences from his trip to Calcutta, to his service with the United States Army Dispensary, to his day-to-day experiences in the city, and to his work preparing the U.S.S. Marine Panther to transport GI's and patients from India in early 1946.

Abstract:: Edward Parker Read (1868-1944) was a Black entrepreneur who mainly sold cure-alls. He also marketed himself as an extremely educated and successful man, and may have written several books and engaged in many other industries including publishing, insurance, financial, charitable, real estate and medical. This collection contains both personal materials relating to his wife Allie (1880-1965) as well as financial documents, advertisements, broadsides and correspondence relating to his many business endeavors.

Dr. W. H. Reed family papers, 1864-1939 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Willoughby H. Reed (b. 1856) was a doctor, pharmacist, and historian who lived in Norristown, Pennsylvania. His father-in-law, Samuel F. Jarrett (1825-1917), was the County Treasurer for Montgomery County, and a farmer. The Dr. W. H. Reed family papers, 1864-1939, include genealogical research on the Reed family by W. H. Reed, as well as personal papers of W. H. Reed and S. F. Jarrett.

Abstract:: The papers in this collection comprise psychological profiles of criminals taken by Swedish doctor and forensic psychiatrist Olof Kinberg during his tenure at Långholmen's Central Prison (Långholmens fångvårdsanstalt) on Långholmen Island, Stockholm, Sweden. The individual typescript dossiers are in Swedish. There are short summaries and some notes handwritten in English.
