Government Study Commission of Delaware County records, 1973-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Under the Home Rule Charter and Optional Plans Law (Act 62) of 1972, for the first time in Pennsylvania history, local governments were authorized to change their governmental structure upon voter approval. The Government Study Commission of Delaware County began meeting in July 1973. The home rule charter they drafted went into effect in January of 1976, making Delaware County the first in the state of Pennsylvania to become a home rule county. The Government Study Commission of Delaware County records, 1973-1975, consist of papers originating with or consulted by the Delaware County Government Study Commission. It includes the minutes, correspondence, press releases, and other records of the commission, as well as publications on governmental structures consulted by the commissioners during the course of their work, and drafts of the home rule charter they wrote.

Dr. W. H. Reed family papers, 1864-1939 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Willoughby H. Reed (b. 1856) was a doctor, pharmacist, and historian who lived in Norristown, Pennsylvania. His father-in-law, Samuel F. Jarrett (1825-1917), was the County Treasurer for Montgomery County, and a farmer. The Dr. W. H. Reed family papers, 1864-1939, include genealogical research on the Reed family by W. H. Reed, as well as personal papers of W. H. Reed and S. F. Jarrett.

Frank Rumler papers, 1960-1995 (bulk) 1870-1995 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Frank Rumler (1917-2005)--who a Philadelphia Inquirer reporter called "Mr. Limerick"--was a civic-minded resident of Limerick Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. A handyman at Bethlehem Steel Plant in Pottstown, he also served several terms as township supervisor and was a member of the Linfield United Church of Christ. The Frank Rumler papers, 1870-1995, include personal papers of Frank Rumler, as well as documents pertaining to his terms as a township supervisor and his involvement with the Linfield United Church of Christ.

Abstract:: Bristol Borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, became an important area due to its location along the Delaware River, a major land route, and subsequent rail line linking Philadelphia and New York City. Incorporated in 1720, it served as the county seat from 1705 to 1726. The Bristol (Pa.) Borough municipal records, 1730 to 1998, consist of Borough Council meeting minutes, roll books, ordinances, and financial records. Also included are records from various departments and subgroups of the Borough, in particular Bristol Water Department and Police Department records, and Justice of the Peace dockets.

Hatboro Borough records, circa 1885-1905

Abstract:: In 1715, the Crooked Billet Inn was built by John Dawson in what is now known as Hatboro Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. It was a farming village that boasted one of the first rural libraries in Pennsylvania, the Union Library Company. The Hatboro Borough records, circa 1885-1905, is primarily made up of the Borough of Hatboro government financial records, including cancelled checks and check stubs, bills and receipts, and bonds. There is also an area map, and several quarantine signs for chicken pox and other communicable diseases.

Quakertown Historical Society collection of ledgers and deeds, 1767-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Quakertown, Pennsylvania, incorporated in 1855, is a town located in the northeast portion of Upper Bucks County. The town remained quite small until the mid-nineteenth century, when the construction of the North Pennsylvania Railroad helped turn it into a significant commercial center. The Quakertown Historical Society collection of ledgers and deeds, 1767-1991, consists of various ledgers from different creators, as well as an assemblage of local deeds. It seems likely that the majority of ledgers are Quakertown Borough records, although many are not clearly identified. The collection also includes record books from Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society, Camp #489 (Quakertown, Pa.), Powelton Cut Glass Company, and several unidentified sources.

Abstract:: Martha McAvoy King (1904-1997) of Phoenixville, Chester County, Pennsylvania was a life-long activist-volunteer and leader in local civic affairs. Specifically, she was involved in numerous social service programs relating to health and human services, education, and housing. The Martha McAvoy King collection on Chester County (Pa.) human services, circa 1950-1980, includes papers relating to her volunteer activities, primarily her involvement with Chester County's Children's Services Advisory Committee and the county's housing authority. Materials include reports, correspondence, minutes, financial papers, and membership lists.

Abstract:: The first recorded mention of "Kennett Township" in Chester County, Pennsylvania is from 1705. An abolitionist stronghold, Kennett was popular with freedom-seekers escaping slavery prior to the Civil War due to the presence of progressive Quakers and a community of free blacks that was established as early as 1830. Later, the Kennett area became known for producing more than half of the mushrooms consumed in the United States. The Kennett (Pa. : Township). Board of Supervisors records, 1848-1974, consist of documents produced by the governing body and various administrative departments of Kennett Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania including minute books, correspondence, and tax and other financial records.
