Abstract:
Julien Cornell (1910-1994) practiced law in New York City, with a special interest in civil liberties. During World War II, he handled many cases for conscientious objectors, as well as advising many other COs about their various problems with the legal system. He was considered an expert on legal issues regarding conscientious objection and Civilian Public Service, and was consulted by many lawyers throughout the country for his opinions.

Abstract:
Emily Greene Balch (1867-1961) was the second U.S. woman to have won the Nobel Peace Prize. Balch embarked on her academic career in the economics and sociology department at Wellesley College. Balch's extracurricular work with the Women's Trade Union League and opposition to World War I resulted in dismissal from Wellesley, and thereafter she helped lead the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Called a "Citizen of the World," Balch worked for peace throughout her life--through disarmament; internationalization of important waterways, aviation, and the polar regions; drug control; and the elimination of the causes of discontent and conflict among peoples.

Abstract:
Hannah Johnston Bailey was a Quaker pacifist, suffragist, reformer,temperance leader, superintendent of the Department of Peace and Arbitration of the National Woman's Christian Temperance Union from 1887 to 1916, president and business manager of the Woman's Temperance Publication Association, the publishing arm of the WCTU, president of the Maine Woman Suffrage Association (1891-1899), and a member of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Included in her papers is material that reflects her personal and professional interests through correspondence and published/unpublished writings, as well as photographs and memorabilia.

Henry Ford Peace Expedition Records, 1915-1916 (inclusive)

Abstract:
On December 4, 1915, Henry Ford and over one hundred delegates and reporters left Hoboken, New Jersey, aboard the steamship Oscar II bound for Norway, and an itinerary of peace meetings in nonbelligerant Europe. The purpose of the Henry Ford Peace Expedition was the establishment of a conference of neutral nations which would seek to implement peace proposals through continuous mediation. Although Ford left the expedition at Christiana (Oslo) for health reasons, the delegation visited European pacifists in Stockholm and The Hague before returning to the United States in January 1916.

Rose Dabney Forbes Papers, 1914-1924 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Rose Dabney Malcolm Forbes' (ca. 1875-1947) main interest was peace and international relations, sbut he also gave her time to the fields of food conservation and child welfare. Forbes was chairman of the Massachusetts Branch of the Woman's Peace Party from 1915 to 1920. Under her leadership the Massachusetts branch helped organize a food conservation program during the First World War. In 1920 Forbes became a member of the Advisory Council Massachusetts branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She was also active in many other organizations, including the Massachusetts Peace Society and the National Council for Prevention of War. Rose Dabney Forbes was a wealthy woman who gave funds the National Council for Prevention of War, giving that organization $100,000 between 1921 and 1942.

Pennsylvania Committee for Total Disarmament Records, 1930-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Pennsylvania Committee for Total Disarmament was active from 1930 to 1936, chiefly in and around Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Through public opinion and personal contacts, PCTD supporters pressured Congress to support total disarmament, including passage of the Frazier Amendment outlawing war. Other objectives of the Committee included a Congressional investigation of the munitions industry, opposition to all preparations and training for war (including ROTC), and support for conscientious objectors, both American and those from other countries. The Committee was disbanded in 1938.

Massachusetts Peace Society Records, 1816-1917 (inclusive) 1911-1917 (bulk)

Abstract:
The Massachusetts Peace Society was first formed in 1815, and a new organization reformed in 1911. The records of both groups have been combined here to form one archival collection. The Massachusetts Peace Society (MPS)was the second [third?] such society to form in America on December 28, 1815, organized primarily by Noah Worcester (1758-1837), a Unitarian minister. By 1819 the MPS had over 850 members, with branches established throughout the state and beyond. The MPS merged, into the newly formed American Peace Society in May 1828. A new Massachusetts Peace Society was reorganized on April 27, 1911, with Samuel B. Capen as President and James Tryon as Secretary. It was possibly a branch of the American Peace Society. World War I put an end to the activities of the MPS.

Central Organisation for a Durable Peace Collected Records, 1914-1919 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Central Organisation for a Durable Peace was formed at The Hague (the Netherlands) in April 1915 by representatives from nine European nations and the United States. The deliberations of this meeting were summarized in a manifesto, and a nine point minimum-program calling for coercive sanctions, which were studied by nine international research committees and several national committees. Departing from strict pacifism, the organization expressed a willingness to accept military sanctions against countries that started hostilities without first making a good faith effort to resolve a dispute by submitting to international arbitration or making some other appeal to the existing peace machinery.
