Abstract:
John McConnell was born in 1915, in Davis City, Iowa. He has been an minister, author, editor, advocate for the environment, and businessman. He organized Meals for Millions in 1962 in San Francisco to feed displaced Hong Kong refugees and organized the Minute for Peace radio broadcast in 1964. In 1968 McConnell designed the Earth Flag, depicting the planet as seen from space. McConnell proposed the idea of Earth Day in 1969 to celebrate a peaceful planet. He also proposed Sea Citizens in 1974, and Earth Trustees in 1995. John McConnell died in 2012.

Abstract:
Consider the Alternatives Productions was established in 1972 by the Philadelphia chapter of SANE, to conduct educational and non- partisan political activities and to receive tax deductible contributions. It was first called the SANE Education Fund of Pennsylvania. One project supported by the SANE Education Fund was a weekly half-hour radio broadcast called "SANE Views the World." In March 1978, the title of the series was changed to "Consider the Alternatives." By 1990 the organization funded only two projects: the Consider the Alternatives radio program and the SANE Education Fund Peace Award. In August of that year the name of the organization was officially changed to Consider the Alternatives Productions.

Abstract:
The Peace and Justice Studies Association (PJSA) is a non-profit organization formed in 2001 as a result of a merger of the Consortium on Peace Research, Education and Development (COPRED) and the Peace Studies Association (PSA). The PJSA is dedicated to bringing together academics, K-12 teachers and grassroots activists to explore alternatives to violence and share visions and strategies for peacebuilding, social justice, and social change. The group also serves as a professional association for scholars in the field of peace and conflict resolution studies, and is a North American affiliate of the International Peace Research Association.

American Union Against Militarism Records, 1915-1922 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 1915 a group of New York pacifists and near-pacifists organized the "Anti-militarism Committee" to combat the war spirit of the time. Activities included lobbying, publishing, a lecture campaign, and the establishment of a Civil Liberties Bureau. The most notable achievements were the work in the successful effort to avert war with Mexico in 1916 and the encouragement of opposition to peacetime conscription following World War I. The office was raided by the government and American Union Against Militarism publications were sometimes stopped by the postal authorities but the organization continued unintimidated.

Concepcion Picciotto maintained an anti-nuclear protest in Lafayette Park, across from the White House in Washington (D.C.) from 1981 until her death in 2016 -- which was the longest such vigil in U.S. history.

Norman J. Whitney Papers, 1938-1967 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Norman Jehiel Whitney (1891-1967) was a Quaker teacher, writer and devoted peace worker. From 1919-1957 he helped establish, and directed for many years, the Syracuse Peace Council. He left Syracuse in 1957 to work for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) in peace education. Whitney's major peace work was in the area of counseling conscientious objectors to war (COs), particularly those in Civilian Public Service (CPS) camps. In 1941 he helped establish the New York State Board for Civilian Public Service, which attempted to counsel and assist Conscientious Objectors in New York state.

Abstract:
Collected Document Groups (CDGs) are collections for which the Swarthmore College Peace Collection has only some material from the organizations and individuals, collected by various entities through the years. In a small number of cases, the SCPC is the official repository for a CDG, but it was not given Document Group (DG) status because of the limited amount of material, or because it does not reflect the donor's full activities. CDG-C was established in June 2001 to include groups that seem to have no set office location, but change their address with every new leader, or because of other circumstances do not have a clear designation as a CDG-A or CDG-B.

Abstract:
This collection contains materials given to the donor by her aunt, June Miller Thompson. Materials include photos, media, audiotapes, and diaries related to the Great Peace March. Her writings related to peace, peaceful civil disobedience, nuclear war, and nuclear energy are also included. Her engagement in the Ribbon prior to and during August 1985, included her participation and presence (and that of her husband, Bill Willard Thompson) in Hiroshima while the Ribbon was unfolding in Washington, DC. She is the sister of Justine Merritt, the donor's mother. The collection also contains mterials given to the donor by her mother, Justine Miller Merritt. Materials include photos, books, audiotapes, VHS tapes, media, diaries, and writing related to the Ribbon, a multi-year grassroots effort to educate and motivate people to protect the earth and all that they love from the dangers of nuclear war.
