Abstract:
The People's Council of America for Democracy and Peace grew out of the First American Conference for Democracy and Terms of Peace, held in New York, May 1917. It was organized to work for an early and liberal peace at the end of the World War. It favored world organizations and disapproved of conscription.

T. Corder Catchpool Collected Papers, 1914-1952 (inclusive)

Abstract:
T. Corder Catchpool refused any service when the Compulsory Military Service Act was passed in 1916 in Great Britain. He was in prison slightly more than two years, after which he published On Two Fronts: Letters of a Conscientious Objector, a memoir about his experiences during the war and in prison. After World War I, Catchpool became a relief worker, secretary for the Friends International Centre in Berlin, and peace worker. He performed reconciliation work with the Friends War Victims Relief Committee in Berlin and eventually became secretary of the Quaker Centre there. After his arrest by the Gestapo because of his assistance to those adversely affected by Hitler's regime, Catchpool returned to England and made frequent trips to the continent to work as an interpreter for English peace efforts and as a relief worker for Germans in Czechoslovakia and Lithuania. Helena Maria Sickert was born in Germany and moved to England early on. She was an author, journalist, and lecturer involved in peace activism, feminism, and social justice. She became chair of the British Section of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and was a British delegate to the League of Nations. Her dream was that women, if they used their power, could make an end to war.

Abstract:
The Indochina Resource Center was founded in 1971 to inform the American people, legislators, and the media about the war in Indochina. The IRC also disseminated information about the countries of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam where U.S. military personnel were fighting or bombing. The IRC changed its name to the Southeast Asia Resource Center in 1976. In 1982 the organization was absorbed by Asia Research Center.

Muriel Lester and her sister Doris created Kingsley Hall, in 1914 as a community center for the area residents. For 20 years, Muriel made Kingsley Hall the center of her work. In 1934 she became Ambassador-At-Large and later Traveling Secretary for the International Fellowship of Reconciliation [IFOR].

Elkinton Family Doukhobor Papers, 1884- (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Doukhobors are a pacifist sect. They originated in Russia but were forced to emigrate to Canada in 1898 due to their refusal to bear arms for the Tsar. In the late 1930s their leader, Peter P. Verigin, created an organization known as the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ, also known as the Orthodox Doukhobors, which has maintained the tradition of Doukhobor cultural activities. The Elkinton Family, a prominent Philadelphia (Pa.) Quaker family, and other members of the Society of Friends in Canada and the United States have offered moral and material assistance to the Doukhobors because of the connection of their beliefs in pacifism and simplicity.
