Abstract:: Promoting Enduring Peace was founded in 1952, with headquarters in Woodmont, Connecticut. Principles of the organization included: peace with freedom and justice for all, support for the United Nations, and belief in religion as the fundamental force for righteousness. Today PEP's mission is to conduct peace education promoting the advent of a harmonious planetary commonwealth through the convergence of the worldwide movements for disarmament, social justice, and environmental stewardship as the foundation of sustainable peace; through education and citizen diplomacy. The PEP established the Gandhi Peace Award.

Horace Gundry Alexander Papers, 1915-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Horace Alexander was born in England in 1889 and died in the United States in 1989. As a life-long member of the Religious Society of Friends, he was interested in Indian rights and worked with Gandhi and others for many years to lobby for it. He wrote books about Gandhi and other subjects.

Friends Coordinating Committee on Peace Collected Records, 1951-1987 (inclusive)

Abstract:: By 1951, it was agreed that the Friends Coordinating Committee on Peace was strictly a consultative and coordinating group for the peace efforts of Yearly Meetings and such Quaker entities as the American Friends Service Committee, the Friends Committee on National Legislation, the Friends World Committee for Consultation, the Peace and Social Order Committee of the Friends General Conference, and the Friends Peace Committee of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. The annual meeting of the FCCP gave Quakers an opportunity to spend a day together sharing experiences and making proposals for cooperative projects. In 1986 it was decided that the role of the FCCP was no longer viable and was being taken over by other agencies, so that it was disbanded.

Belva Ann Lockwood Papers, 1878-1917, 1984, 1986, 1992 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Belva Ann McNall Lockwood (1830-1917), was the first woman attorney to practice before the Supreme Court. She personally lobbied members of Congress to pass a special act admitting women to the bar of the Court, and first practiced before the Court in 1879. Lockwood ran for the U.S. presidency in 1884 and 1888, being the first woman to have a complete, national campaign for that office. From the 1870s onward Lockwood was active with the radical peace group, the Universal Peace Union, representing the organization at several international peace congresses.

Wilhelm Söllmann Papers, 1901-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Friedrich Wilhelm Sollmann (1881-1951), German labor leader, journalist, and Reichminister. Exiled from Germany in 1933, Sollmann sought refuge in the United States and eventually became an American citizen, adopting William F. Sollmann as his preferred form of address. Sollmann was a member of the German delegation to the Versailles Peace Treaty conference and he served as a representative to the Constitutional National Assembly at Weimar. In 1920 Sollmann was elected to the first of his eight terms in the Reichstag where he was to be a prominent member of the committee on foreign affairs. Sollmann's career as a lecturer and advisor on Germany and international affairs commenced in 1937 and continued until the time of his death.
