A collection of websites, crawled by the Internet Archive, focusing on resources created by The College of Physicians of Philadelphia related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including the College's "Documenting #COVIDPHL at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia" digital exhibit. About the project: The Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries (PACSCL) has partnered with Archive-It to develop a public, archived collection of web content relating to COVID-19's impact on the Philadelphia region. Abstract:
In 2010, the Office of Operations was organized to oversee hospitality, front of house and receptionist, visitor services, hall and grounds, renovations, security, and the parking lot. Previously, at least as far back as 1991, the management of facilities and special events fell under the responsibilities of the Office of Institutional Advancement (as of 2015, merged with Office of Development and External Affairs and Office of Communications into the Office of Advancement). While the Office of Operations was not organized until 2010, much of the work fell under its direct predecessor, the Office of Programs and Internal Services, or was managed under the current (2019) Director of Operations, Antonia Oberthaler. The Lecture and Event Files of the Office of Operations span the years 1975 to 2019; however, the bulk of the material dates from 1991 through 2007. Abstract:
In 2010, the Office of Operations was organized to oversee hospitality, front of house and receptionist, visitor services, hall and grounds, renovations, security, and the parking lot. Previously, at least as far back as 1991, the management of facilities and special events fell under the responsibilities of the Office of Institutional Advancement (as of 2015, merged with Office of Development and External Affairs and Office of Communications into the Office of Advancement). The Records of the Office of Operations date from 1971 to 2019, although the bulk of the material dates from 2000 to 2013. The records include project files for major maintenance or renovations to the building, including the 2012 renovations of Thomson Gallery and Veranda, the 2016 elevator replacment project, and the 2018 second floor bathroom addition; the building stewardship plan commissioned in 2009; and preliminary materials for the current (2019) capital campaign building transformation. Abstract:
The Mütter Museum was founded in 1856 when Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter bequeathed his personal medical museum to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. From Thomas Mütter's collection, the museum grew as a noted repository for unique collections of medical specimens across the world. This collection of the records of the Mütter Museum span the years 1892 through 2015, although the bulk of the material dates from 1988 through 2007. The records document the past exhibits displayed in the Museum, "Only One Man Died" and "The Medical World of Benjamin Franklin;"; grant funded projects, including the 2011 Quay Brothers film and the Museum Assessment Program (1994 to1995 and 2004 to 2006); portrait appraisals and acknowledgment letters; press clippings; and special projects, including wet specimen conservation in 1987, as well as various projects about the Hyrtl skull collection. Abstract:
The Section on Medical History was founded in 1904. In 1905, the Section began holding meetings at which lectures on medical history were presented, inviting papers from physicians and scholars from a variety of backgrounds. By the 1970s, the section had become the sponsor of several annual lectures, including the Kate Hurd Mead Lecture (co-sponsored by the [Woman's] Medical College of Pennsylvania, now Drexel College of Medicine) which was started in 1952 and the Samuel X. Radbill Lecture (1974). As of 2019, the Section on Medical History remains an active body of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The Records of the Section on Medical History IV span the years 2005 to 2013, and consist of correspondence, Executive Committee minutes, lecture flyers and programs, and speaker information, including CD-Rs of recorded lectures sponsored by the Section. Abstract:
The Publications collection ranges in date from 1910 to circa 2012 and consists of brochures and pamphlets, calendars, newsletters, and directories published by the College of Physicians, as well as several brief histories of the College written by former Fellows. Of note are short-lived staff newletters, dating from 1988 to 1995; the Fellows Forum, a monthly newletter produced for Fellows of the College from 1974-2006, and eventually replaced with monthly email updates in 2006 (printed); and Fugitive Leaves, a library newletter published in 3 series: the first from 1935-1938, the second from 1956-1969, and the third from 1986-1996. Currently (as of 2017), monthly email updates are still sent by the Office of Advancement to staff and Fellows, and the Library publishes a monthly/twice-monthly blog entitled Fugitive Leaves, which was started in October 2015. Abstract:
The Office of the Executive Director is the lead office in charge of administering the business of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The Executive Director oversees the activities of the College of Physicians staff including staff of the Historical Medical Library, the Mütter Museum, the Francis Clark Wood Institute, and the Finance Department. The Executive Director also oversees the College functions of institutional advancement, communications, membership, and special events. The records in this collection document the everyday administrative activities and governance of the College, and span the years 1984 to 2010, with the bulk of materials dating from 1997-2003. Abstract:
Established in 1994, the Section on Public Health and Preventive Medicine creates a forum for deliberation of relevant issues in public health, and provides information for the development of health policy. The Section brings together public health professionals from all across the region to study public health problems and assess potential responses. The Records of the Section of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (SPHPM) document the 1994 establishment and later activities of the Section during its first 15 years of existence, up to 2010, through meeting minutes, correspondence, membership information, and programming. This collection is a rich resource for those interested in the programming for and advocacy of a non-profit institution related to public health issues. Researchers should note that the media found in this collection (cassette tapes) are not able to be played as the Library does not have the required hardware.
