Friends' Publishing Corporation, 1959-2005 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The primary activity of the Friends' Publishing Corporation is Friends Journal, a Quaker periodical. The latter was the successor to The Friend, the serial published by the Orthodox Quakers (1827-1955) and Friends Intelligencer, published by the Hicksite Quakers (1844-1955). It was established as a result of the merger of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings, and the first consolidated issue was dated July 2, 1955. Originally published weekly and then bi-weekly, it became a monthly periodical in 1988.

Pendle Hill (School : Wallingford, Pa.) Records, 1915-2011 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Pendle Hill is a Quaker study center located in Wallingford, Pennsylvania. It was established in 1930 out of an earlier Quaker school and study center, the Woolman School. The Woolman School was established in 1915 under the care of the General Conference Committee of the Seven Yearly Meetings (Hicksite). In 1917, it was reorganized as a joint enterprise of Hicksite and Orthodox Friends, governed by a Board of Managers. The Woolman School was incorporated in 1918. In 1928, it was reorganized as a non-degree granting graduate level study center and retreat. In 1930, the name was changed to Pendle Hill, and it moved to its present location. In addition to offering classes and lectures, Pendle Hill publishes pamphlets and other writings on religious and social concerns.

Ozone Club records, 1901-2001 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Ozone Club was a golf association for Quaker men in the Philadelphia area. It was established in 1901 and included in its membership the presidents of Swarthmore College and prominent Quakers. The Niblick Club which was set-off from the Ozone Club in the 1920s, also was a men's golf association with Quaker membership. The Ozone Club records include minute books, correspondence and miscellaneous papers. A small amount of records from the Niblick Club is also included with the collection, including annual meeting programs and photos.

Friends' Boarding Home of the Concord Quarterly Meeting, 1890-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Friends' Boarding Home of Concord Quarterly Meeting, a Quaker boarding home for the elderly in West Chester, PA, was established in 1891. It was originally for women only, but by 1894, men were also admitted. In 1936, the Home moved to a new facility which was constructed with funds provided by a bequest from Nathaniel Hickman. After 1976, the Home no longer offered nursing services. The collection contains minutes, reports, admission and financial, and other related papers, some of which are restricted.

Abstract:: This collection contains the records of the Friends Conference on Religion and Psychology, primarily from the years 1943 to 1997. The Conference was originally founded as a way of addressing the spiritual turnmoil people were feeling after World War II. It continues to examine the ways Jungian psychology interacts with Quaker beliefs at its annual three-day conference over the Memorial Day weekend.

Fair Housing Council of Suburban Philadelphia and Suburban Fair Housing Records, 1956-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Contains the records of the Fair Housing Council of Suburban Philadelphia and its affiliated organization, Friends Suburban Housing, Inc. Friends Suburban Housing, Inc., was a non-discriminatory real estate brokerage firm in the Philadelphia suburbs, founded in 1956. The Fair Housing Council of Suburban Philadelphia also began in 1956 as the Southeastern Delaware County Area Committee of Friends Suburban Housing Committee. Records include minutes, case files, financial and legal papers.

Atlantic City Friends Collected Records, 1872-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Contains the records, 1872-1976, of the Trustees for Friends' Meeting House and Lots at Atlantic City, N.J., and the records, 1986-1991, of the committee of the board of managers of Atlantic City Friends School which tried to save the School. Records are lacking between 1976 and 1986. The Trustees for Friends' Meeting House and Lots at Atlantic City was a self-perpetuating and independent board of trustees which held title to the properties in which Atlantic City Friends Meeting and Atlantic City Friends School were held. The School was financially sound until the early 1970s when its fortunes paralleled the decline of Atlantic City. In 1986, the School left Atlantic City for temporary quarters. It was laid down in 1988 due to poor enrollment.

Abstract:: William Orick (1888-1990), who came to this country as a German refugee, was a Quaker and member of Schenectady Monthly Meeting in New York. He conducted extensive research on how women were regarded in history. The collection contains his research papers primarily include his manuscripts, notes, and correspondence relating to Orick's study on women in the Catholic Church.

Nancy P. (Nancy Peel) Speers Genealogical Papers, 1906-1995 [bulk 1972-1995] (inclusive)

Abstract:: Nancy Peel Speers (1925-1995) was a leading expert on Quaker genealogy. Married to David Speers (1919-1968), she was a lifelong resident of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. She was employed as an archivist and staff genealogist at Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College. The Speers' Genealogical Research Papers consist of personal research on the Peel, Speers, and Olmsted families, research on Quaker families, including extensive work done on Cox, Kester, Griffith, and Lloyd families, and miscellaneous Quaker genealogical research.
