Abstract:: David S. Richie (1908-2005) spent his life devoted to public service, particularly in the areas of work camps and cooperatives. A birthright Quaker, he served as Secretary of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Social Order Committee from 1939–1973 and was president of the Board of Friends Housing, Inc. He also was involved with the American Friends Service Committee and other organizations. These papers are divided into correspondence, writings, and topical files as assembled by Richie.

Darlington Family Papers, 1831-2012 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains the papers of the Darlington family of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and Woodstown, New Jersey. Quakers with strong ties to Swarthmore College, the family was involved in education, social and peace concerns, and businesses in the Philadelphia area. Charles J. Darlington (1894-1966) served as Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends during the reunification of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings. The collection includes family correspondence relating to the Darlington, Shortlidge, Gause, and Palmer families as well as genealogical research and 20th century Quaker activities.

Abstract:: Includes the records that document the work of the Board of Managers of Swarthmore College beginning in 1862, together with the records of the Board of Managers of the Friends Educational Association (1862). Also included are the records of committees appointed by the Board to oversee the operation of the College from its founding to the present. Records consist of minutes, committees of the Board, lists of members, resolutions, reports, papers of individual members of the Board, and secondary works and reference files relating to the Board of Managers.

Alfred H. Bloom papers, approximately 1973-2009 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Alfred H. Bloom was the 13th President of Swarthmore College (1991-2009). One of Swarthmore's longest-serving presidents, he emphasized the importance of intellectual rigor, diversity, and social responsibility on campus, and is best known for revitalizing the Honors Program and eliminating varsity football. A linguistics scholar, Bloom formerly held faculty positions at Swarthmore College and Pitzer College, and resigned from his Swarthmore Presidency to become Vice Chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi. This small collection includes a large amount of material about the football controversy, as well as an assortment of other papers from Bloom's presidency, and a small amount of material relating to his personal affairs and research.

Swarthmore College Physical Education and Athletics Department records, 1921-1996 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Some structured exercise program, physical education or "physical culture," has always been required of Swarthmore students as a condition of enrollment or graduation, from its earliest years into the 21st century. In 1888 Swarthmore College formed a Department of Physical Culture, now known as the Physical Education Department. The Swarthmore College Physical Education and Athletics Department records, 1921-1996, includes reports on the department, sports news releases, and other departmental-wide records; women's physical education logs and scorebooks from women's sports games; men's sports statistics; and programs, clippings, and score sheets from sports played by both genders.

Carl Barus Papers, 1968-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Carl Barus was a professor of engineering and social activist. He taught in the Engineering Department at Swarthmore College from 1952 to 1985. He was active in negotiating a resolution to the 1969 admissions office sit-in by SASS and subsequently served on the Black Concerns Committee. Contains papers on African American student concerns at Swarthmore from the SASS sit-in in 1969 to minutes and papers of the Black Concerns Committee in the 1980s.

J. Roland Pennock Papers, 1930-1995 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Roland Pennock was a prominent professor of Political Science at Swarthmore College where he taught from 1932 to 1976. This collection contains memorial letters which were received by the college following his death in 1995; writings including journal articles, speeches, contributions to reference publications, and reviews of his books; and his papers concerning the College committees on which he served, including Educational Policy, Divestment, and Honors.

Swarthmore College Meetings of the Faculty Records, 1877-2001 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This series includes the minutes and miscellaneous records of the Faculty, in both original paper format and microfilm. The minutes for the first meeting covered in Vol. 1, for 3rd mo. 5, 1877, start with approval of the minutes of the previous meeting, indicating that there is probably a missing volume.

Abstract:: The Dean of Students oversees vital aspects of student life, including pre-major academic advising, career services, health and psychological services, residential life, multicultural initiatives, and social and extracurricular activities. The Swarthmore College Dean's Office records, circa 1871-2005, include correspondence files, meeting minutes, reports, clippings from the student newspaper ("The Phoenix") and other publications, and other documents pertaining to student life on campus and administrative matters with which past Deans have been involved. Note that access is currently restricted to parts of this collection.
