Abstract:: This collection is composed of correspondence of Elizabeth Howell and her family, Philadelphia-area Quakers. Most of the letters were received by Elizabeth Howell, many are condolence latters on the death of her mother in 1866. In addition to family news, there is a receipt for tuition at Friends Select School, a letter of acknowledgement from Israel Howell to Chester Monthly Meeting, and a short note relating the reaction of the author to the assasination of Abraham Lincoln. Correspondents include Sally R. Howell and Jacob Howell.

Abstract:: The Society of Friends or Quakers (the terms are synonymous) was founded in the middle of the seventeenth century in England by George Fox and others. The Friends Historical Library has collected Quaker disciplines since its founding in 1871. FHL is also the official repository for the records of seven American yearly meetings.

Abstract:: These manuscripts of the Smedley family, Quakers of Chester County, Pennsylvania, were collected by Mary (Green) Smedley in the early 20th century. The scrapbook contains primarily 18th century legal and property documents concerning Thomas Smedley (1688?-1758) of Willistown, Chester County, a member of Goshen Monthly Meeting, and his descendants, particularly George Smedley (d. 1783) and family. The scrapbook includes records relating to a property dispute between George Smedley and George Albridg(e) which was taken up by Goshen Monthly Meeting and led to Smedley's disownment by the Meeting on 1766 12 month 5. His appeal to the Yearly Meeting was rejected the following year. Of particular interest is a 1759 manumission document for James Thompson, signed by George, Francis, John, and Thomas Smedley, as willed by their father Thomas Smedley. Abstract:: This is a collection of papers relating to the troubles over the New Light faction in Lynn Monthly Meeting, Massachusetts. Included are copies of letters and articles, and personal written accounts of the events at Lynn Monthly Meeting from 1822-1826 that led to the trial of New Lights, including Jonathon Buffum, John Alley, Jr., and Mary Newhall. Included are accounts by Stephen Oliver and Micajah Collins, as well as a letter from Mary Newhall, written to Stephen Gould, an elder of Newport Monthly Meeting, Rhode Island.

Included is correspondence between Esther Hunt Collins and her first husband, Joshua Hunt, his brother John, her children Elisha, Caleb and Rachel, her second husband, John Collins, and Hannah Yarnall. Also included is correspondence between Rachel H. Roberts and her husband, David. The collection includes genealogical information on the Roberts, Hooton, and other related families, along with wills and account books of Joseph and Susanna Roberts. Letters relate family news, impressions of Redstone Monthly Meeting of Friends, and discussions of Quaker discipline.

Abstract:: This collection includes letters and papers of the Roberts and French families. Included is a record of the disownment of Asa Roberts from the Orthodox meeting in 1828, presumably due to his Hicksite beliefs,and a letter from John Mott to Josiah Mott, regarding Quaker testimony and issues of the Hicksite separation. Also included are wills and deeds of Robert French and other members of the family, as well as maps and charts of their properties in Burlington County, NJ.

Abstract:: Samuel Comfort (1776-1862) was a leader of the Hicksite Quaker movement and the grandson of John Woolman. The bulk of this collection is writings and correspondence of Samuel Comfort, many dealing with the Hicksite separation and questions of Quaker discipline; but there are also papers relating to other family members, including references to his grandparents John and Sarah Woolman.
