Abstract:

This is a collection of papers relating to the troubles over the New Light faction in Lynn Monthly Meeting, Massachusetts. Included are copies of letters and articles, and personal written accounts of the events at Lynn Monthly Meeting from 1822-1826 that led to the trial of New Lights, including Jonathon Buffum, John Alley, Jr., and Mary Newhall. Included are accounts by Stephen Oliver and Micajah Collins, as well as a letter from Mary Newhall, written to Stephen Gould, an elder of Newport Monthly Meeting, Rhode Island.

In 1822, the turmoil in Lynn Monthly Meeting of Friends in Massachusetts reached a climax, as so-called New Light ministers became disruptive and were disowned. Young Quaker minister, Mary Newhall, preached a unitarian doctrine. Jonathan Buffum and John Alley, Jr. were among her New Light followers who were disowned.
