Abstract:: Robert L. Sherman, born in 1866, was a playwright and a theater manager. A prolific author, he began writing plays for Alexander Byers and the Chicago Manuscript Company, a printing business that sold and rented play scripts to theater companies in the United States from 1895 until 1922. Alexander Byers acquired most of the plays he published by pirating them. This collection consists of 139 mimeograph versions of play scripts which were part of the inventory of the Chicago Manuscript Company.

Abstract:: James Tyson graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1863, and went on to a noted career as a physician in Philadelphia. His interested in pathology led to his career as an educator, and he eventually rose in the ranks of the Penn Medical School. The bulk of the James Tyson collection is his correspondence to his father Henry Tyson, his sister, and his wife, Fannie Bosdevex.

Abstract:: John Scott (1824-1896) was an American lawyer who served as U.S. senator from Pennsylvania from 1868 to 1875. The collection consists of letters written to him by colleagues and private citizens, and several of them feature Scott's shorthand reply.

Abstract:: Charles Custis Harrison was Provost at the University of Pennsylvania 1894-1910, a time of expansive growth for the University, especially in the number of buildings added to the campus. Using his extensive personal contacts from his business and political associates, Harrison raised funds (making large contributions himself) for dormitories as well as Houston Hall, the University Museum, the Medical Laboratory, the Law, Engineering, and Dental School buildings from the wealthy of Philadelphia society. The Charles Custis Harrison Files of the Office of the Provost Records document his activities as Provost of the University of Pennsylvania and as Vice President and President of the Board of Directors of the University Museum. This collection though part of the Office of the Provost Records, includes material from almost all aspects of Harrison's career with the University of Pennsylvania.
