Historical Society of Frankford photograph collection, mid-19th century to mid-20th century

Abstract:: The Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is located in the lower northeast section of the city and is bordered by the Frankford Creek on the south, Castor Avenue on the west, Cheltenham Avenue on the north, and roughly the I-95 expressway on the east. Originally a village, Frankford was incorporated as a borough in 1800 and was later absorbed into the City of Philadelphia in the 1854 Philadelphia city/county consolidation. As of 2015, Frankford is a working-class neighborhood with a diverse population, including a large number of African Americans, Asian Americans, Polish Americans, Italian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and West Indian Americans. The Historical Society of Frankford photograph collection consists of approximately 1,132 mid-nineteenth through mid-twentieth century photographs, negatives, drawings, and prints depicting Frankford and other Northeast Philadelphia area buildings, landscapes, and street scenes. Abstract:: Edward Ash was a British Quaker and doctor. His letterbook includes personal correspondence related to religious convictions and family news. Letter writers include Barclay, Anna Maria C. of Horne, Robert Barron, Gulielma Penn, and William Pim. A number of letters are addressed to George Fox. A copy of a letter from Ellis Hooke to Margaret Fell is also included.

Abstract:: Joshua Longstreth Baily (1826-1916) was a Quaker merchant in the dry goods business, and was involved in African American causes, peace issues, and temperance. Volume 1 contains extracts organized by topics such as: benevolence, courage, doing for Jesus, fear, forgiveness, honesty, lying, missionaries, prayer, resignation, and truthfulness. Volume 2 contains extracts of essays on literature and copied poems.
