Charles S. Cox letters and printed matter, 1926-1983 (bulk 1926-1929, 1944-1945)

Abstract:: The Charles S. Cox letters and printed matter consist of over 600 letters, postcards, and a few telegrams from Cox to his wife during their courtship and first years of marriage in the late 1920s, as well as during Cox's time in the Navy during World War II. During the war Charles served in the United States Navy as a motor machinist's mate on the USS Mona Island. The USS Mona Island was one of many ships anchored in Buckner Bay, Japan, in 1945. There are also some letters from Cox's wife and friends, newspaper clippings, and other printed matter in the collection. Charles Stanley Cox (1906-1992) was born April 18, 1906, in Eaglesmere, Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. Charles married Margaret Elizabeth Strauser (1907-1985) on March 17, 1928. Prior to enlisting in World War II, Charles worked at a lumber company and a rubber company. He died on April 22, 1992.

Abstract:: This collection consists of subject files created by the Office of the President during the tenures of the first six presidents of the Drexel Institute: James MacAlister (1840-1913, president 1891-1913), Hollis Godfrey (1874-1936, president 1914-1921), Kenneth Matheson (1864-1931, president 1921-1932), Parke R. Kolbe (1881-1942, president 1932-1942), George P. Rea (1894-1978, president 1942-1944), and James Creese (1896-1966, president 1945-1963), as well as during the interim presidency of Robert C. Disque (1883-1968, interim president 1944-1945). The subject files cover individuals affiliated with the university, faculty, university committees, historical events, and subjects of interest. It is likely that the files were compiled and arranged at least in part by Harriet Worrell, who worked in the Office of the President during the mid twentieth century; many records contain her annotations.

Lucy Evans Chew diaries and papers, 1912-1967 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Lucy Evans Chew graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1918. Shortly after her graduation, she married Samuel Chew, an English professor at Bryn Mawr. For the majority of their married life, the Chews remained in the area surrounding Bryn Mawr. The Lucy Evans Chew Collection is primarily comprised of 58 volumes of her diaries from the years from 1920 to 1968. The diaries include descriptions of her daily life, her association with the college, her travels, and her reflections on her life.

Fritz and Karoline Solmitz papers, 1929-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Fritz Solmitz (1893-1933) was an early and outspoken leader in the opposition to Nazism, an editor of a Social Democratic newspaper in Lübeck and a member of the City council. Because of his active opposition to the Nazis, and probably because he was a Jew, he died of mistreatment in a German prison shortly after Hitler came to power. Karoline Somitz (1893-1966) was, like her husband, active in civic affairs. Much of the collection contains letters and photographs, some translated from German.
