Abstract:: This series includes the minutes and miscellaneous records of the Faculty, in both original paper format and microfilm. The minutes for the first meeting covered in Vol. 1, for 3rd mo. 5, 1877, start with approval of the minutes of the previous meeting, indicating that there is probably a missing volume.

Abstract:: The Dean of Students oversees vital aspects of student life, including pre-major academic advising, career services, health and psychological services, residential life, multicultural initiatives, and social and extracurricular activities. The Swarthmore College Dean's Office records, circa 1871-2005, include correspondence files, meeting minutes, reports, clippings from the student newspaper ("The Phoenix") and other publications, and other documents pertaining to student life on campus and administrative matters with which past Deans have been involved. Swarthmore College Admissions and Financial Aid records, 1869-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:: In the early years of Swarthmore College, applicants applied directly to the College President and the cost of attendance was $350 per year. In the 21st century, a separately staffed Admissions Office and an Office of Financial Aid exist to support these functions. This small collection, dating from 1869 to 2003, includes admissions blanks, lists of applicants, reports, and other materials that document Swarthmore's admissions and financial aid policies and procedures.

Swarthmore College search committees records, 1974-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection consists of records of the New Presidential Nominating Committee for the 11th President of Swarthmore College, 1972-1973, and the Presidential Nominating Committee for the 12th President of Swarthmore College, 1981-1982, as well as records from hiring several other executive office positions: Dean of Students, Dean of the College, Assistant to the President, and Vice President of Finance. The files do not contain personal information about specific candidates. They do contain records about committee formation and procedures, job descriptions, templates for correspondence with candidates, committee meeting minutes and correspondence, and other papers.

William J. Cooper Foundation Committee records, 1943-1974 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The William J. Cooper Foundation provides funding for lectures, exhibits, concerts, and performances at Swarthmore College. The Cooper Foundation Committee, composed of students, faculty members, and staff members, works with members of all campus constituencies to arrange events and residencies. The William J. Cooper Foundation Committee records, 1943-1974, consists of administrative files that primarily document the committee's efforts to select, arrange, and publicize events.

Phi Sigma Kappa, Phi Chapter Records, 1921-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Phi Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa was established at Swarthmore College in 1906. By 1991, it was abolished, a victim of mounting debt and student disinterest. The collection includes correspondence, 1956-1957, concerning the Chapter's pledging of an African American, the first at the College; other correspondence mostly concerning the mounting debt; and agreements and leases.

Kappa Sigma Pi Records, 1958-1971 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Kappa Sigma Pi was the Pi Chapter of the national fraternity Kappa Sigma until 1962 when it was suspended on charges of "attempting to involve other chapters in organizing to defy some of the Kappa Sigma basic principles." The local folded in 1971 due to low membership and financial debt. This small collection contains material pertaining to its last years.

James H. Scheuer Papers, 1957-1995 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains the papers of Representative James H. Scheuer (1920-2005), Democrat from New York, Swarthmore College Class of 1942. It documents his long career as a politician and public servant. His early interests in housing and urban planning soon broadened to encompass the diverse needs of his constituents in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. Both in the House and in external committee work, Scheuer was actively involved in issues relating to the environment and the quality of life for people throughout the world. The papers are supplemented by a large collection of photographs (SPA 80).

Irma E. Zimmer Papers, 1960-2004 (inclusive)

Extent:: 1.75 linear ft.
Abstract:: Irma Elizabeth Zimmer was a life-long Swarthmore resident who taught at Swarthmore High School from 1946 to 1976. After her retirement, she was active in groups that attempted to prevent the merger into the Wallingford-Swarthmore School District. After these efforts were unsuccessful, she participated in projects to start a charter school, reopen the Swarthmore K-8 School, and develop a senior community center on Wallingford-Swarthmore School District property. She also served on Borough Council from 1974-1984 and was a member of the Swarthmore League of Women Voters, Swarthmore Womans Club, and Swarthmore Republican Committee. This collection contains her papers, largely her post-retirement projects pertaining to school protest groups.

Friends World College Records, 1958-2001 (inclusive)

Extent:: 10 linear ft. (8 boxes and 35 volumes)
Abstract:: Friends World College was conceived as an accredited, co-educational, degree-granting liberal arts college combining a residence program with the opportunity for foreign travel and study. Planned as a "college without walls," it was sponsored by the New York Yearly Meeting and opened in September 1965. The College flourished in the 1960s counterculture environment, but ran into financial difficulties in the 1970s. While much of its support came from Quakers, in 1975 it became officially non-sectarian. It was merged into Long Island University in 1991. The collection contains the records of Friends World College, 1958-1992, compiled for New York Yearly Meeting by George Nicklin; correspondence and legal papers concerning the transfer and sale of assets and the resulting lawsuits; topical files of George Nicklin; and his records on Pax Amicus, the group which opposed the merger and loss of College assets.
