Abstract:: Roxborough and Manayunk are neighborhoods in the northwest section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, adjacent to Wissahickon Valley Park. In the 19th century the Wissahickon Creek was lined with mills and the neighborhoods were industrial and working class, but the Wissahickon was later turned into a public park and Roxborough and Manayunk underwent substantial gentrification during the latter part of the 20th century. The Roxborough Manayunk Wissahickon Historical Society local history collection, 1838-2012, consists primarily of newspaper clippings, articles, unpublished genealogies, copies of primary-source documents, and other secondary-source materials relating to local history. The collection also includes a small amount of original primary-source materials, such as receipts and invoices, correspondence, photographs, meeting minutes, and ephemera.

Abstract:: Born in Lower Merion, Pennsylvania, John Levering (1789-1878) was a graduate of the University Academy and a noted mathematician and surveyor. The Levering family papers, 1807-1973, consist of a family bible, a burial plot deed, two obituaries, two photographs, and genealogical notes.

Abstract:: Jefferson Moak is an archivist and historian whose interests include maps, genealogy, and Chestnut Hill (Philadelphia) local history. The Jefferson M. Moak Collection, circa 1998, consists of information on Chestnut Hill compiled by Moak while writing his Master's thesis for Temple University on colonial property in the Philadelphia area.

Abstract:: James J. Reis, a commercial real estate broker in Ambler, Pennsylvania, began collecting old deeds around 1987. The James J. Reis Deed Collection, 1717-1881, consists of 125 deeds for properties in the Philadelphia neighborhoods of Roxborough, Germantown, Chestnut Hill and Mount Airy, as well as Whitemarsh and Springfield townships in Montgomery County.

Abstract:: David Seeger (1890-1961) was a photographer active in the 1910s to 1950s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, especially in the neighborhoods of Manayunk and Roxborough, where Seeger Studio was located. In addition to photographing landscapes and buildings, Seeger also captured images of car accidents for insurance companies and took school portraits and other photographs for neighborhood schools. The Seeger Studio negatives, circa 1920-1940, consist of over 350 photographic negatives taken by Seeger that document a variety of businesses in the Manayunk and Roxborough area that employed him such as Roxborough High School, real estate companies, funeral homes, and insurance companies. The negatives also contain some non-commissioned local images taken by Seeger.

Abstract:: The Henry Howard Houston Estate Papers document the creation and development of a large real estate investment in late nineteenth and early twentieth century Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties. The collection also provides extension information on land ownership in this area from the late eighteenth to mid nineteenth century through the original deeds, which form the title papers series of the collection.
