Abstract:
Lillian Bassett Rankin (nee Stringfellow) was born in 1913 and died in 2009. A graduate of Beaver College (now Arcadia University) and later a teacher there, Rankin lived most of her life in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. A large proportion of the Lillian Rankin papers, circa 1960-2005, consists of photographs and slides. The collection also contains a sizeable amount of her notebooks and writings, and a small amount of financial records, correspondence, and Beaver College/Arcadia University alumni ephemera.

The Old York Road Contemporary Club was organized in 1934 by a group of women who broke away from the Woman’s Club of Jenkintown "because they wished to follow a format of current event study including World Affairs." The Jenkintown Businessmen's Association was established in 1933. Over the next several years the organization changed its name a number of times. In 1961 the group became known as the Jenkintown Chamber of Commerce. The organization marked its expanding geographical interests when it renamed itself the Greater Jenkintown Chamber of Commerce in 1968 and then the Eastern Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce in 1992. The Greater Jenkintown Chamber of Commerce records, 1962-1994, consist of Board of Directors minutes and other materials relating to the activities of the organization.

Montgomery County, situated in southeastern Pennsylvania and established in 1784 out of the western portion of Philadelphia County, has played an important role in U.S. history. Since its founding, it has experienced "booming industry and manufacturing, rich farm fields, advanced transportation, artistic endeavors and unique religious beliefs." The history of the area of eastern Montgomery County has been documented significantly through the collecting efforts of the Old York Road Historical Society. The Old York Road Historical Society scrapbooks collection, 1890-2000, includes scrapbooks created by the Society and created by others that principally cover eastern Montgomery County.
