Abstract:

The Rare Book Room at the University of Pennsylvania opened on May 27, 1947. The opening was attended by more than five hundred guests, and speeches were given by Dr. Charles W. David, Director of Libraries; President George W. McClelland; Dr. A. S. W. Rosenbach; and the primary speaker for the evening, Randolph G. Adams, Director of the William L. Clements Library of the University of Michigan. The collection contains administrative documents pertaining to the planning of the event including program details, correspondence, acceptances, and regrets.

Abstract:

This collection contains four journals of an unknown Londoner cataloguing current events from 1789 to 1810 and from 1829 to 1831. The books present short news extracts in chronological order with a date assigned to each entry. Some of the most recurrent themes are aspects of everyday life but the diaries also include political and military news, court verdicts, and information about theaters in London among many other things. This collection is characteristic of a trend towards journal-keeping that grew in England throughout the 18th century. However, these diaries are entirely impersonal and include no information about the author's own life or opinions.

William Nickerson Bates manuscripts on Euripides and Sophocles, 1929-1930, circa 1940 (inclusive)

Abstract:

William Nickerson Bates (1867-1949) was a professor of Greek Language and Literature at the University of Pennsylvania from 1895 to 1939. He wrote primarily on Attic tragedy, including two major volumes on Euripides and Sophocles, the manuscripts for which can be found in this collection. The volumes, Euripides, a student of Human Nature and Sophocles serve to acquaint the modern reader (one with little or no knowledge of ancient Greek) with the original meaning of the plays since, as Bates stated, no work had theretofore been published for such readers that dealt directly with the original Greek texts.
