Abstract:

Arthur M. Dannenberg, Sr., born in Philadelphia on 7 January 1891, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1913. He served an internship at the Jewish Hospital of Philadelphia — now the Albert Einstein Medical Center (AEMC) — and then volunteered for service in the Medical Corps of the United States Army. After his service, he applied for an appointment to a junior position in the pediatrics department of the Jewish Hospital, and eventually became the senior attending pediatrician and chief of pediatrics at the Northern Division of the AEMC in 1938. Dannenberg served as a consultant to a number of Philadelphia area institutions engaged in the care of children. His private practice increased rapidly following his appointment as chief of pediatrics at the AEMC and his involvement as consultant to so many of the social agencies in Philadelphia that were engaged in the care of children. Elkinton, Waring Family papers, 1815-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:

This collection includes information about multiple generations of the Elkinton and Waring families. It is concentrated on two generations: firstly, that of Howard West Elkinton (1892-1955) and Katharine Wistar Mason Elkinton (1892/3-1961), his wife, and secondly, that of their daughter, Theodora Elkinton (1927-) who married Thomas Waring (1921-2001). It is a story of life choices made by these Quakers: for Howard and Katharine Elkinton, to serve under the American Friends Service Committee in Europe after World War I and during World War II providing relief aid, and for Theodora and Tom Waring to continue this tradition by serving in Finland after World War II and then in the field of education in the United States.

Biddle family papers, 1747-2011 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Nicholas Biddle (1786-1844) was one of the most prominent men in early 19th century America, best known as President of the Second National Bank of the United States. Many of his family members were also prominent to their contemporaries and to history, including Nicholas's brother, Commodore James Biddle (1783-1848), who served in the Navy for decades and worked to open up trade with Asia. The Biddle family papers, 1747-2011, consist largely of original manuscript documents from a number of Biddle family members, notably Nicholas Biddle (1786-1844), Commodore James Biddle (1783-1848), Letitia Glenn Biddle (1864-1950), Charles J. Biddle (1890-1972) and Katharine Legendre Biddle (1893-1973), and Nicholas Biddle, Jr. (1917-2013). In addition, there are some secondary-source materials pertaining to the Biddle family and the administration of Andalusia, the family's ancestral home.
