Abstract:
Delaware County was the first section of Pennsylvania to be settled by Europeans, specifically Swedes in 1643. It was in the city of Chester, the original county seat of Delaware County, that William Penn and the General Assembly of Pennsylvania adopted Penn's "Great Law of Pennsylvania," which granted the right to vote, citizenship, freedom of religion and trial by jury to all settlers. Located adjacent to Philadelphia, Delaware County's suburban population grew rapidly in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Delaware County Historical Society photograph collection, circa 1870-1990, consists largely of original photographs, with some photocopies and copies of lithographs and prints, of local people, organizations, and events. There are also glass and film negatives, postcards, slides and photograph albums.

Abstract:
The papers of Emma Cadbury (1875-1965), a Quaker social worker, consist of correspondence, programs, essays, notebooks, and clippings. These papers were kept by Cadbury while attending Quaker Women's Yearly Meetings and summer schools at Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges and the George School (Pennsylvania), during the early 20th century.

Joseph C. Turnpenny scrapbook, 1833-1926 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The scrapbook has an embossed cover titled Joseph C. Turnpenny and contains a collection of approximately 60 mostly loose 19th century engravings, lithographs, full-sized silhouettes, photographs, post cards, and other prints, primarily of Quaker and Philadelphia scenes. It is labelled on the first page "Elizabeth Bunting Scrapbook," but the contents indicate that Joseph C. Turnpenny, a member of Spruce Street Monthly Meeting, was a collector, perhaps together with Elizabeth Bunting and later Joseph T. Bunting. The first page which has an 1833 newspaper clipping glued to a page with a mounted engraved copy of a George Washington letter, 1785, marked "Engraved for the Port Folio -- JE Hall." The contents include portraits of well-known Quakers including Elizabeth Fry, Benjamin Lay, and Isaac Hopper, as well Fred Harvey lithographs of Arizona and amateur silhouettes of Joseph Turnpenny and his wife Elizabeth dated 1892. Louise Deshong Woodbridge glass negatives, 1884-1905 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Louise Deshong Woodbridge (1848-1925), a member of the prominent Deshong family of Chester (Delaware County, Pennsylvania) was an active socialite as well as an amateur photographer and painter. Taking up photography in the early 1880s, Woodbridge had a fairly successful career with her work being exhibited at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The Louise Deshong Woodbridge glass negatives, 1884-1905, consist of approximately 200 primarily glass plate negatives with some 4x5" film negatives that document the creator's family, friends, and social activities. They also document Delaware County and the surrounding area around the turn of the 20th century, particularly historic structures, such as the Woodbridge and Deshong mansions, and landscapes. Of special interest are some photographs of the White House, including the White House conservatory, and First Lady Ida McKinley.
