Taylor and Nicholson family papers, 1869-1944 1810-1999 (inclusive) 1869-1944 (bulk)

Abstract:: The Taylor and Nicholson family papers contain the records of these two families from the late-nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. The two focal points of this collection are William Nicholson Taylor (1882-1945), and his mother, Rebecca Morgan Nicholson Taylor (1857-1944). William graduated from Harvard in 1903 and afterwards spent considerable time abroad studying architecture. He also served as an officer in the United States Military from 1916 to 1917, and worked in diplomacy after the war. Rebecca was a noted writer and poet during this time period. The strength of this collection is the collected materials related to William's time in the military, as well as his sketchbooks related to architecture and Harvard. Researchers interested in the works of Rebecca Morgan Nicholson Taylor or Quaker women, should also consult Rebecca's notebook and correspondence. There is extensive correspondence between the various members of these two families from the 1880s to 1940s.

Abstract:: The scrapbook of Samuel A. Purdie includes clippings of his writing, including a series of essays on "Quakerism in Dixie," a series entitled "Journal of a Conscript," and a series entitled "For the Pioneer, Sojourn in the Land of Secession after a Collapsed Rebellion." The clippings are pasted into the Back Creek Monthly Meeting school attendance record books.

Elliston Perot Morris Jr. scrapbook, 1917-1924 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The scrapbook covers Morris's time at Haverford College from 1917 through 1922, with a few documents from 1923. A significant portion of the scrapbook contains photographs of the campus, professors and administrators, athletics teams and events (including the football, soccer, and track), and several photographs of fellow students.

John A. Hisey Jr. scrapbook, 1914-1923 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This scrapbook contains a variety of materials from John A. Hisey Jr.'s time at Haverford College. Born in Philadelphia on October 31, 1895, to salesman John Alan Hisey Sr. and his wife Gula Hisey, John Hisey Jr. entered Haverford in 1914, as part of the class of 1918. His scrapbook documents his first three years at Haverford, especially his athletic career. The book also provides evidence of the military service that interrupted Hisey's studies in 1917, and of his return to Haverford in 1921, to finish his degree.
