Abstract:: Account books are ledgers in which commercial and personal financial accounts are recorded. This collection consists of individual account books that were given to the Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College as single accessions.

Anna Gillingham photographs, 1870-1953 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Anna Gillingham (1878-1964) was a prominent Quaker educator and author. She taught at Friends Central School in Philadelphia from 1901-05, was school psychologist in the Ethical Culture School in New York City from 1905-36, directed the remedial reading program at the Punahon School in Honolulu from 1936-38, and was a consultant on remedial reading after 1938. She also co-authored a book on remedial training for children with Stillman. She was co-founder of the Orton Society, a national organization promoting research and treatment of language disabilities. This collection contains black and white photos from Anna Gillingham's work, life, and travel.

Emily Howland Family Papers, 1763-1929 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Emily Howland (1827-1929) was a Quaker humanitarian and educator who is particularly known for her work with formerly-enslaved African Americans in Virginia during and after the American Civil War. A birthright Friend, Emily Howland was the only daughter of Slocum and Hannah (Tallcot) Howland of Sherwood, N.Y. She was educated locally and for a brief period in Philadelphia, and then moved to Washington, D.C. in 1857 to teach at the Miner School for Freedmen. During the war she worked at a contraband camp in Virginia, establishing a school and coordinating relief activities. She returned to Sherwood after her father's death in 1881 and contributed time and money toward the maintenance of the Sherwood School. She continued her interest in the education of African-Americans in the south, and was also involved in woman suffrage and temperance. Frazer-Willets Family Papers, 1756-1995 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Willets family were members of Westbury Monthly Meeting and lived at their farm, Homewood, from the mid 19th century until 1965. Eliza K. Willets, the last resident, was the daughter of Thomas Whitson Willets and Hannah Keese; known affectionately as Aunt Lila, she graduated from Swarthmore College in 1893. Her sister, Anna, married Edward Morgan Lapham of Chicago in 1908. In 1940, their daughter, Anne Willets Lapham, married E. Wayne Frazer, the son of John E. and Elizabeth Gamber Frazer, and moved to Pennsylvania.

Purdy Family Papers, 1801-2004 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains account books, financial papers, family correspondence, and miscellaneous papers of William Purdy, a New York Quaker preacher, and his family. He was a member of Amawalk Monthly Meeting, attending Croton preparative and worship meetings, and traveled in the ministry, leaving an undated record of the Friends and meetings that he visited. Purdy was donated money, land, and labor towards building a new bridge and school house in Cortlandt. Collection also includes genealogical information compiled by Elliott Baldwin Hunt and Arthur M. Tingue.

Abstract:: This collection includes personal correspondence between Mary B. Parsons and members of the Braithwaite family, primarily Anna and Isaac Braithwaite. Letters concern family matters and, occasionally, meeting activities at Flushing and Kendal and news of Joseph Gurney and Elizabeth Fry. Other correspondents include J. Bevan Braithwaite and Martha G. Braithwaite.

Abstract:: James S. Haviland, a birthright Quaker, was born in 1849, the son of William F. and Sarah Ann (Carpenter) Haviland of Purchase Monthly Meeting (N.Y.). The collection contains correspondence, financial, and legal papers, and miscellaneous manuscripts of the families of James S. and Elizabeth (Griffen) Haviland. Includes materials of the related Griffen, Field, and Parry families, especially the correspondence of Seneca Ely and Priscilla Stubbs Parry of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, 1826-67, and of his sister, Rachel Parry Brosius.

George Iden Daybooks, 1859-1898 (inclusive)

Abstract:: George Iden (1820-1897) was a Hicksite Quaker farmer of Sherwood, Cayuga County, New York. He married Jane Elizabeth Cox/Cock (1835-1917) in 1882. George Iden was active in Scipio Monthly Meeting and served as an Elder. The collection contains thirty-four daybooks with daily notes on farm life in the second half of the nineteenth century: crops and livestock, financial accounts, weather, and some personal notes.
