New York Friends Service Committee records, ca. 1917-1922 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The New York Friends Service Committee was established in 1917 following an appeal by New York Yearly Meeting to assist the American Friends Service Committee in its clothing appeal for European war relief. By 1922, the focus had changed to famine relief particularly for Russia, and the Committee was encouraged to work directly through AFSC. This small collection contains minutes, annual reports, and financial records.

Anna Gillingham photographs, 1870-1953 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Anna Gillingham (1878-1964) was a prominent Quaker educator and author. She taught at Friends Central School in Philadelphia from 1901-05, was school psychologist in the Ethical Culture School in New York City from 1905-36, directed the remedial reading program at the Punahon School in Honolulu from 1936-38, and was a consultant on remedial reading after 1938. She also co-authored a book on remedial training for children with Stillman. She was co-founder of the Orton Society, a national organization promoting research and treatment of language disabilities. This collection contains black and white photos from Anna Gillingham's work, life, and travel.

Friends World College Records, 1958-2001 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Friends World College was conceived as an accredited, co-educational, degree-granting liberal arts college combining a residence program with the opportunity for foreign travel and study. Planned as a "college without walls," it was sponsored by the New York Yearly Meeting and opened in September 1965. The College flourished in the 1960s counterculture environment, but ran into financial difficulties in the 1970s. While much of its support came from Quakers, in 1975 it became officially non-sectarian. It was merged into Long Island University in 1991. The collection contains the records of Friends World College, 1958-1992, compiled for New York Yearly Meeting by George Nicklin; correspondence and legal papers concerning the transfer and sale of assets and the resulting lawsuits; topical files of George Nicklin; and his records on Pax Amicus, the group which opposed the merger and loss of College assets. Henry Watson Wilbur Papers, 1879-1914 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Henry Watson Wilbur (1851-1914) was a New York Quaker minister and social reformer. The collection contains some addresses and writings on religion and the advancement of the Society of Friends, biographical and memorial items giving tribute to his work on behalf of the National Association of Religious Liberals and the Friends General Conference, and a few letters.
