Letters and documents relating chiefly to John Haddon, Quaker and anchor maker of England, to his purchases of land in New Jersey, and the founding and establishing of Haddonfield, New Jersey by Elizabeth, his daughter, who came to the colony in 1701, "to take up her father's land," and who married John Estaugh, a young Quaker preacher, in 1702.

Abstract:
The collection consists almost entirely of autograph letters, signed, mostly addressed to Reuben Haines, 1793-1834, about one-third addressed to him personally, the other two-thirds addressed to him as Corresponding Secretary of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. The writers of the latter were scientists, scholars, and statesmen from all over the world, including John James Audubon, 1785-1851, Thomas Jefferson, 1743-1826, Rembrandt Peale, 1778-1860, and many others.

This collection spans more than two centuries and includes most notably members of the Allinson and Taylor families. There are also letters from Joseph Bonaparte, Sarah Moore Grimke, Julia Ward Howe and George Washington. Prominent material types include correspondence, diaries, financial, legal and property papers, maps, photographs and poetry. The richest subject veins are anti-slavery, including the Free Produce Association of Friends, the yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia and settlement of land in New York.

The collection is composed of correspondence of the family of David Sands Shearman and his wife, Hepsa Hathaway Howland Shearman of New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Poughkeepsie, New York. The Shearman and Howlands were prominent New England Quaker merchant and whaling families, intertwined by business and marriage. Much of the correspondence is directed to Hepsa, largely from her children who pursued a range of careers. Early correspondence is with her husband Captain David Sands Shearman, her siblings, and his relations and contains business and family information from New Bedford, MA, and Poughkeepsie, NY.
