Jean Scobie Davis papers, 1892-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Jean Scobie Davis, a 1914 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, taught economics and sociology at Agnes Scott College, Vassar College, Pierce College, Wells College and the American Women's College in Beirut. A lifetime interest in prison reform resulted in her work at the New York State Correctional Facility in Bedford Hills, New York. The Jean Scobie Davis papers is a collection consisting largely of Jean Scobie Davis' diaries and correspondence covering nearly all stages of her life. The collection, which dates from 1892 to 1985, is divided into seven subseries: "Autobiographical Material;" "Correspondence;" "Diaries;" "Family History;" "Photographs;" "Prison Reform;" and "Scrapbooks and Guestbook." Material found in the collection is diverse, and consists of letters, reports, bound diaries as well as loose diary pages, photographs, scrapbooks, and handwritten notes.

Abstract:: James Wood (1839-1925) was "interested in education, philanthropy, in the various branches of agriculture, in archaeology, history, Indian lore, anthropology, science, in prison reform and above all, in the Bible and religion," (ABS, 2). He was also a business man, serving as President of the Genesee Salt Company in Piffard, New York. The James Wood papers are divided into twelve series: "Biographical Material:" "Agriculture;" Business and Financial Material;" "Collected Quaker Material;" "Correspondence;" "Hugh Barbour Writings and Talks regarding James Wood;" "Journals;" "Organizations;" "Photographs and Albums;" "Political Involvement;" Prison Reform;" and lastly, "Writings by James Wood." This collection contains many materials, including correspondence, photographs, record books, awards, and printed material such as newspapers and pamphlets. Abstract:: Katherine Paxson's family history/memoir, entitled "Growing Up Quaker," includes vignettes describing various events in Paxson's life, which she recorded to pass on to her family members. Includes biographical entries for her grandfathers, Isaac H. Thompson and Thomas E. Anderson; her grandmothers, Anne W. Hutton Thompson and Nancy Almina Anderson; her father, I. Walter Thompson; and her sister, Ruth Thompson Davidson. Vignettes describe Paxson's "Early Years," "Summer Days," "Twelfth Street Friends Meeting," her mother's influence in her life, "Visiting Grandpa and Grandma in N.C.," "Ecumenical Outreach," and "Westtown School."

David Cooper memoir, 1724-1795 (inclusive)

Abstract:: David Cooper wrote his memoir during his later years, when his health was failing, so that his children would be able to reference an account of his life after his death. A note on the inside cover reads: "A Gift of David Cooper to his daughter Martha Allinson." In the memoir, Cooper recounts his early life, his family history, his marriage, the birth of his children, his Quakerism, his struggles with his faith, his work as a representative in 1761, and his attendance at Quaker Meetings.

J.P. Elkinton autobiography, 1966 (inclusive)

Abstract:: J. P. Elkinton's autobiography describes his childhood and family, his attendance at Haverford College, from which he graduated in 1908. He also describes his experiences with the Society of Friends, particularly his travels on religious visits, and his adult life with his wife, Mary Bucknell, and their children. In addition to stories from various periods of his life, he provides biographical sketches of his family members.

Mary Garrett family papers, 1874-1915 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Mary Elizabeth Garrett (1854-1915) promoted women's education by founding the Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Maryland, helping to finance Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and ensuring that women were admitted to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her family was prominent in Baltimore society, which allowed her to pursue her philanthropic activities. She was an active suffragist and financially helped that cause until her death in 1915. The Mary Garrett family papers houses the business and family papers of the Garrett family. This collection, which dates from 1874 to 1915, consists of correspondence, diaries, notebooks, biographical information, and business and estate records. The large number of family letters suggest a close relationship between its members.

Douglas V. and Dorothy M. Steere papers, 1896-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Douglas and Dorothy Steere were prominent figures of the Quaker movement in the twentieth century, and deeply committed to the causes of peace and spiritual enrichment. This commitment is evident in their involvement with Quaker-led relief work after World War II, Quaker spiritual retreats, international diplomacy, and Dorothy's work with the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. Douglas taught philosophy at several institutions including Haverford College, and published extensively on topics in Quaker philosophy and history. This collection contains considerable material related to Douglas's work as a writer, professor, and diplomat. Given his role as a distinguished figure within 20th century Quakerism, this material is also relevant to researchers interested in recent Quaker history as a whole. There is also some fascinating material produced and collected by Dorothy related to the Civil Rights movement, including a letter from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
